Should a slab cracker inform PCGS,NGC,etc. ?

If I crack a coin out of the slab,am I morally obligated to inform the grading company? Obviously this practice will compromise serial numbers and population reports. Or would the grading companies even
consider your claim of slabcracking. Any thoughts will be appreciated.image

PCGS would like to receive the inserts back from cracked slabs. They offer a 50c rebate (I believe).

PCGS says they want the slab inserts back and will pay 50 cents each.

I returned 43 almost 8 weeks ago. (Mostly Ikes)

Checked with customer service; still in process.

Grading is not the only thing PCGS does slowly!

Yes....Return them, It keeps the Pops adjusted correctly and the value of the Top Pops in check.

  • Here's something for D.H . to smoke in his pipe..............suppose , JUST SUPPOSE that PCGS for some reason becomes defunct ; a new super grading company comes along and takes over the coin slabbing world................

And those ten million slabs or so ALL get broken out , and ALL those inserts get sent in for the .50 cent refund

....CAN YOU SAY 5 MILLION BUCKS !!!!!!?

    yes send in those tags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but it will for the most part NEVER happen

but it is a nice thought
  • image Yes, send in the slabs !! Most high grade, or very rare, low pop coins have been sent in multiple times. Especially where there is a huge price difference !!
Sending in the slabs helps keep the population report accurate, otherwise the population report is worth little !!

Obviously a defunct company will not honor a reward or bounty of that nature. If PCGS slabbed stuff is king of the hill now it will damn well still be good enough if the company tanks.

  • .......o.k , .i'll give you that ; remove the word defunct ; and imagine them still in buisness - pityfully helplessly watching as the 'new" company takes over and their mailboxes swell with millions of returned inserts.................CAN YOU DIG THAT ???
So the word "defunct" merely meant they were knocked out buisness by the new kid on the block -
you think cause a marriage goes "defunct" , a man don't gotta pay child support ??
You think because your New G.T.O sucks a valve and the engine blows (defunct) that you don't have to continue to make payments ??

The reward for return of the inserts is totally optional on the part of PCGS and the option not to continue the reward program can be put into effect at any time. Nowhere does it say that payment of the reward is obligatory on the part of PCGS. The examples you cite to support your argument are meaningless.

  • image Don't worry, I can't see that happening. It takes more than a piece of plastic, and a set grading fee to be number one in the grading business.
Does anyone remember the pop- one - 1963- PF- 70-Deep Cameo Lincoln that was re- purchased by PCGS, because it developed carbon spots !! ( for $ 40,000.00- I might add !!!!! )
If your 1909-S-VDB-MS 65 Red turns Red- Brown, then all you have to do is turn it into PCGS for an Adjustment ( difference in price ).
In addition, PCGS grades all three ( 3 ) sides of the coin. The others grade only the obverse, and reverse.
Futhermore, it's true there are many " pretenders to the throne ", in the marketplace, but when it comes time to sell, their slabs have a lot less value than PCGS.
How many " experts " would buy a 1893-S Morgan in a ACG slab ?
You might hear, " Buy the coin, and not the holder ". What you will NEVER hear is : " Sell the coin, and not the holder ".
