  • We could give her one.

Here is a beautiful Portuguese name (well, from Brazil):

    Katia

  • Mrfred, hey, hey - Katya is Russian name! imageimageimage Or if you wish as most of Russian names it was originally Greek name, I suppose - ask Dimitri to be sure.

Seriously, Eric, check that website - great source of Portuguese coins info!

I know the woman is supposed to be a representation of the Republic, because Brazilian coins have a similar woman on them, but I've never known her to have a nickname. I agree that Katia is too Slavic to sound Portuguese, though. How about Juliana? image

The moedas site is interesting, though, especially the explanation of why the early Portuguese republic coins are so rare. Here's a rough translation:

"The 1st Republic (1911-1927): It was a time of great political and financial instability, aggravated by World War I. Those factors are reflected in the national coinage by the constant changes in type, size and metallic composition. Banknotes were frequently used as substitutes for coins, which were becoming increasingly rarer."

I second that, great site image

I've always thought Katia is the short for Ekaterina, which I assume is of Greek origin.

    Spoon/Dimitri,

That bronze (copper?) Cabo Verde design is without a doubt, IMHO, the finest design for pure simplicity in 20th c. coinage. At least, in the category of "Liberty" head types. The portraiture of the girl and the wide rims combine for a special appeal in my eye......love it.

  • Um, I had a student from Brazil named Katia, which is why I thought of the name. But come to think of it, who knows? Maybe her parents were Russian.

    Juiliana is A-OK with me.

Here is a website (Adobe format) which discusses the allegorical representation on Portuguese stamps. It should also apply to the coins.
