If you can get a strike on him before he leaves the neg, he might get NARU'ed and then you are off the hook. That happened to me not long ago - a deadbeat buyer got the axe before he could get me.

But once you get one, you become immune to the rest of them, if any, ever. The comment and your response to it, are important too I believe.

Place a LINK in your reply to his Neg, if he give you one. Ebay will pull any feedback with links in them, if informed , I understand

I have 11,000+ positives and 8 negatives, but the negs still smart . My goal is to try to maintain a 99.9 percent positive feedback rating, or less than one negative per 1,000 positives, but if you do enough business on eBay, the negs are pretty inevitable. About a year ago I called my eBay rep over a negative that I felt was totally unfounded, and all he told me was that they are "battle scars". Life on the Bay of E can be frustrating sometimes, but you also get to know a lot of really nice people that more than make up for the occasional jerk.

True, but there's no way of knowing how many strikes this buyer has. S/he may already have two.
