Help needed - how do you protect yourself on eBay if you've already bid?

I made a low bid on a relatively low value card (this is for sentimental reasons) yesterday.

I didn't pay enough attention to the seller's recent feedback which has been downright awful in the last month (9 neutrals/negatives out of 27 feedback items). A few other recent buyers contacted me warning me about this seller.

Now, what is the best way to protect myself at this point - should I consider a bid retraction? If I pay via paypal, I should be safe even if he decides to not send it? Obviously, I plan to pay the $1.30 insurance.

Just use your credit card. If he doesn't send it, you dont pay. That simple!

I would let the auction play its course...........Paying $1.30 for Paypal insurance? It cannot hurt.......... I have never seen any reason to use the Paypal insurance but this might be the time.

Why pay extra for ins. when you are covered by your credit card for free? I can understand if you dont have or dont want to use a credit card but all my online purchases are done with a credit card and paid off monthly. Its the safest way to buy.

Bid retraction... it's not like you are retracting your bid from an esteemed seller.
