Got my cards today

Here are the better ones out of the bunch. Am I the only one concerned about the movement of the cards inside the PSA holders. I had 18 graded and every card is loose inside the holders. Some people say "hey its already graded and holdered so who cares if they move". I think they should incorperate a penny sleeve to prevent possible edge damage. Am I alone in thinking this?

I'm not the biggest fan of the mylar sleeve inside holders. I own a few cards that have them and some are ok and definitely needed, but others don't look as good. Oddball issues though-not mainstream stuff like what you're showing.

  • No you are not alone in being bothered by the movement of the cards inside the holders. When I first saw it I couldn't believe it. I brought it up to the board a while ago and was told sternly I was wrong and the holders are designed not to touch the corners. Someone actually did a test of this and ran a PSA graded card through a laundry dryer and a paint can shaker. I don't have the website where the test was posted, but someone else might.

Good, I was afraid I was alone. I have bought PSA holdered cards before and you could see that the edges were damaged by the holder. By the design the corners should be safe but I have a hard time believing that the edges are 100% safe. I know this topic might strike a sore spot with some of the board members but sometimes a change in the design of the holder is not the worse thing that could happen.

I don't mind cards floating around a little in the custom size holders. For some reason, the plastic in the Beckett holders and some PSA holders really ruin the aesthetics for me.

I would say it does diminish the overall appearence, not much though. The card being protected properly should come first. Its like this, PSA and Beckett strongly urge us to send the cards to them in cardsavers and penny sleeves. They both say dont use toploaders because movement = damage. Especially going through the mail. When the cards are sent back to us they are in the holders (PSA) moving all around. It doesnt make sense. Damage can occur by movement, just because they are holdered and graded doesnt change that fact. If I see a PSA 10 card and it looks like it was damaged or doesnt look like it should be a 10, I am not buying it just because it says 10 on the holder. I would buy it if it looks good and deserves that grade.

Hah. You should see how much the cards bounce around in GAI holders.
  • Hey great looking cards. For some reason I have always like that Fouts card. Great grade on the snake too.

a few years ago a board member (brucemo) did an experiment in which he took PSA graded cards and put them inside a paint shaker and he concluded that the cards are not affected at all.

i have never seen a card of mine have edge damage from the space in the holder, but i have seen quite a few instances where both GAI and SGC cards have been damage by their custom build inserts.

I think BGS and BVG are the most secure with the sleeve inside the slab. A close second is the PSA holder because they are specifically molded for the cards.

GAI and SGC holders are horrible in that regard. I have seem many cards trapped between the holder and the extra piece of black plastic. I wouldn't trust my more valuable cards to those holders.

Just to clarify where I stand on this issue. I love the classic look and the design of the PSA holder and label. In my opinion some changes can be made to make the card more secure. I dont want a bunch of people mad at me but I wouldnt trust my cards in the current PSA holders bouncing around inside a paint shaker. In fact I dont think any of us here would take one of our best cards and submit it to this type of test.

I've been thinking of building a Fouts player set (along with a John Jefferson). That is a pretty sweet 9.

  • Nice grades, congratulations.

As far as cards moving around in PSA's holders, I do not worry about that too much... I would if I had a card that PSA does not yet have a custom fit slab for like some of the smallish, odd sized issues.

Thanks for the dryer link. I guess this test tells us one thing , make sure you remove your cards from your shorts before doing the laundryimage

  • I hate the mylar sleeve. it completely hides the surface of the card and the reflections are insane. I've debated having one reholdered just to get the stinking sleeve removed. just don't beat the cards to hell and they will be fine. And apparently even if you do its still fine. What is your aternative? keeping them in card savers?

No offense, but what do you mean by apparently even if you do its still fine? Would you buy a nice new car and beat with a sledge hammer? It will still run but not look so good, right?
