Aaron RC...does it have a shot @ a 9?

The seller seems to think it was unjustly graded an 8. I really don't have an opinion, but I was just curious as to what everyone else thinks.

54 Aaron PSA 8

This is one of those cases where you bid on the card and not the grade, and the seller did a good job of talking it up, but the pic simply isn't big enough to get a gauge of why it's an 8 and not a 9. There has to be something the grader saw to knock it down.

  • I agree with CD... in fact, I can clearly see that the 3 corners visible do not come to the sharp points one would expect on a mint card... I even think I can see small touches on the top two corners.

PSA makes mistakes, but this, in my opinion even given a scan like this, is not one of them.

    nice 8 though.

I have dealt with the seller. If he thinks it deserves a "9", he would have resubmitted. The last time I spoke with him, he had complete sets from '53-69 baseball. A very seasoned collector/dealer.

Didn't this guy get kicked off ebay last week?
    Good for you.

The scan isn't large enough to say for certain (maybe that's the idea), but I don't think it's a 9 based on the corners. The centering and apparent lack of print defects are both very nice for this issue, however.

I don't understand people who claim their card is undergraded and should be resubmitted, but can't be bothered themselves. If it's only a difference between $10 and $20 in value, I can see that, but NOT when going up a grade boosts the value from $3K up to $17.5K.

Me, I'd make the time. In fact I'd make the time over and over, if I was sure this was a $17,500 card trapped in a $3,000 card's holder.

Nor do I buy his argument that he doesn't get a break on his grades because he's not a high-volume dealer. Even if true, don't you think with so many thousands of dollars at stake he'd commission a dealer to submit it for him? Also, that idea contradicts his claim for the card's quality because it implies that it's not really a PSA 9 and needs help from the grader to get that number.

Yes. He was NARU last week so he must have taken care of that problem.

To answer the question "Does it have a shot at a PSA 9?" Absolutely, positively not. If it did, this seller would have re-submitted until it 9'ed, or submitted through a dealer. Bottom line, the card is an 8. PERIOD.

It still will go for what a high end 8 should go for because of the centering and visual appeal. But the fact that he didn't spring for the extra 75 cents to have the pic super sized means to me that he's hiding something. Look at the Babe Ruth ball he has up? If he can get up close pics of that, he can certainly get them for a flat card. This guy's got some amazing stuff.

He had this same card up for auction up a few weeks ago. Not sure if the NARU was connected to the aaron rookie.

Maybe he shilled the card the last time it was up for auction? I always thought something was strange about him. After I won one of his auction, I tried to buy one of his sets. We agreed on a price and then he never contacted me again. Shortly after that, he listed the set on ebay. Sure that happens all thime, but I got a strange feeling. I think what you see is what you get. He will not leave any money on the table for the next guy.
