Is that the best possible quality the Nikon 5400 can create?

The coins look as though they'd be stunning but I wouldn't bid on an eBay auction based on those pictures.

I used a Nikon Coolpix camera for about a month and got sub-quality pictures also. I eventually just got a better camera for not much more than the coolpix 5400 cost.

Sorry, that was kind of harsh. Try lightening the images and finding the macro mode on the camera. That might help.

I like that second one! image I'll be the first to say it was a slightly annoying coin to play with--the lustre's there, but slightly harder to pick up with color due to the "thickness" of the toning. I think it might help if Beartracks could post larger images, too... hard to judge a photo when it's the size of the coin image

Here's my picture of its lustre (from my old setup)

  • The camera can do a better job than that Brandon...but since I haven't mastored it yet......I have no room to talk!!! I do see progress Gary and that last image doesn't look bad at all.....I seem to have to tilt all of my coins to capture the toning just right image

Here is an example of how clear the pictures can be with the 5400...but again...my pictures leave a lot to be disired so.......keep on trying Gary !!!!!

  • Thanks Jeremy. I think that I do have the coins a little bit dark. I was trying to make them as close to what they look like as possible. They are darker here than they were in my Photoshop files.

Brandon, Thanks for the great comments. I keep trying to forget that I got the link for that bogus digitalpic outfit from your post. You are probably a much better photographer than I am...so what? These coins aren't for sale anyway.

  • Gary...are you using the macro setting...it seems like you are having a lot of success with shooting straight down on your coins, but they don't seem as clear as if they were takin using the macro............? image
  • I took these recently with my Nikon 5400.

I have a bunch more, but these are the quick ones I could find that I have shot with my 5400. I have some better ones... Maybe I can find them later...

Brandon, you must remember this guy just got the camera and just learning how to image coins. It takes practice. The 5400 will take very nice images of coins.
  • I would think that coins outside the slab would be fairly easy compared with slabed coins and more specifically toned slabbed coins image

With that said...the images still look real nice image
  • The Nikon does a good job... my Coolpix 4300 does a HELLUVA lot better job than my Fujifilm Finepix A205 did... would you call this a "subpar" picture?

  • Come on Brandon. Not all of us can just afford to scrap one camera and get another one on a whim.
We have to do the best we can with what we can afford, and learn to use it to its best abilitys.
The Nikon 5400 will take very nice pictures, it just takes time and a lot of experimentation with the settings.
I haven't had mine very long and i think I'm doing much better than i was just a month ago.

Gary, just keep on experimenting with different settings and lighting. Eventually you will find the sweet spot. As you can see, the 5400 does take nice coin pictures.

I just found my image of the 85-O, here it is:

Absolutely!! Only way you get better is by experiementing and playing around image That's how I came about with the above picture image

And, I'd be interested in seeing some of Jeremy's early pictures from when he first started imageimage

Looks to me like you are getting glare from the lights on the slabs. You might try backing the lights away a little bit. You want the glare from the light just off of the edge of the coin.

Here is one I took with my Nikon 4300. I've only had the camera a month now and still learning more about it. It was a big step forward from the kodak easyShare I was using. Yes, I know it's a darkside coin but it's just an example.

  • I have been pretty impressed with some of the images you guys are posting......very nice job!!!!

The Nikon Coolpix 4200 takes nice pics too. I am still on the low end of the learning curve though.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Guys and gals,
Thanks for the words of encouragement and advice. This camera is taking far better shots already than the coolpix 885 I had. I am not discouraged in the least. Heck, my pics are already better than some auction houses I know.image

To answer some questions, I am shooting with the flower symbol, which is supposed to stand for macro closeup mode. And I am keeping it green and not white. I may be too far away from the coin(6"-7") and using too much zoom. Also, I think that my pictures are too small, but I have not conquered the method of getting larger pictures onto the PCGS site yet.

Any tips and helpful hints are appreciated.

I shoot in the same mode but do not use the zoom. Leave the lens wide and get 2-3 inches above the coin. Then crop the photo and resize using less JPEG compression, you lose a little quality, but unless you go too low on the compression, quality will be fine.
