First ever Set Registry trans-Atlantic summit

To many of you (though I appreciate, not all) the notion of meeting up with a fellow-denizen of the Set Registry Boards might seem commonplace. But not for me. The idea of visiting the Nationals and hooking up with you all is a long cherished dream. But in the meantime, it was my immense pleasure this evening to welcome to these parts (Dublin, Ireland) the estimable ZodiacMindwarp ( aka Michael Flaherty). Regulars here, especially ’69 baseball regulars, will be familiar with this prince among men. I have experienced his kindness and consideration on a number of transactions. Still it was fantastic to meet up with him in person and talk late into the night (over copious pints, I know you’ll be glad to hear) of the intricacies of many PSA sets (not least his singular passion for the 1965 Topps Embossed set). Several people were praised to the high heavens (take a bow Frank Bakka and B.J. Searls) others were castigated roundly (Ireland’s strict libel laws prevent me from being more specific). A wonderful night, hopefully the first of many, and on future occasions any that find themselves in these parts are welcome to join us … (Michael, I think we’re safe enough).

    Jonathan,

OK, admit it. I'm sure Michael dragged my good name through the trash (castigated sounds kinda painful). Backstabber! image

I had the pleasure of spending time with Michael at last September's Fort show, and I agree completely that he is great company. I'm looking forward to seeing him again at this year's National (and you too perhaps). Say hi to him for me (if he's still there).

The next pints on me! (just try and collect)

    Jonathan.....

Also had the pleasure of helping Michael track down a few '65 "Embossies" at the Fort a few months ago. .. Drank a few pints (....Hmmm...gallons I think..), at the Phillies game too...

    Great company...

    Say Hi for me..

  • Larry,

Sorry, I should have mentioned you among those who were praised ... "He epitomises all that's best in both the hobby and these boards" ... was our verdict, if I recall correctly (which I don't image)

Johnathan, That's great that you and Michael could get together.

<< <i>I have experienced his kindness and consideration on a number of transactions. >>

I totally agree with this as Michael has been a great help to me on the '69 set and I have tried to reciprocate by following his example. I agree with your estimation of Larry too and probably Bob as well image .

This makes the little Florida summit Jeb & I had last weekend pale in comparison (only because of the distance) but I think it's great when any of the registry folk can get together.

  • Let me start by apologizing for my delay in responding to this thread as I have been seriously jet lagged the last two days. At least I think it's jet lag; it might be a hangover from drinking a pint or twelve on virtually every day of my vacation though.

I'm not sure what Jonathan is bragging about, he only got to meet an American baseball card collector. Big deal, we're a dime a dozen. I, on the other hand, had the privilege of spending a few hours chatting with perhaps the only person in Ireland who collects baseball cards!

Jonathan's knowledge of, and love for, our National pastime is really quite amazing. Examples of both can be found in his hall of fame autograph set, replete with fantastic scans of every card. It's hard to believe that he only lived in America for 3 years. And for those of you who complain that there are no card shows in your area, try living 3000 miles away from the nearest one! Jonathan, your positivity was contagious and I hope that you do manage to make it over to a National before too long.

Estimable ZodiacMindwarp? Prince among men? I'm not sure about all of that but I do appreciate the accolades. I just do what I can to enjoy the hobby and that includes trying to help my fellow collectors out whenever I can. Let's face it, this little hobby of ours really wouldn't be all too fulfilling if we simply stored our cards in a closet are were unable to share our passion with like minded individuals. Whether it's communication via message boards such as these, or being able to connect a face to avatars and screen names, it's the interaction between collectors that gives us an added dimension of enjoyment to the sometimes inane obsession that we all share.

    Dave,

I'm not sure our meeting pales in comparison ... after all, we got to see a baseball game!

    Jonathan and Michael,

I'd love to meet you both someday as well!

Sammy Sosa batting - this was a called strike 3, which he argued in the top of the 2nd and got tossed!
