What and how did you choose what to collect?

First of all i'm a newbe who has been lurking for the past couple of weeks.....I've learned many things and picked up some good advice..Thanks!!

My questions are.... What went into your decision on what to collect? Do you specialize in one "area"? Or Do you have secondary or terciary areas? Are you looking to complete a series? Or just picking nice coins that appeal to you?

Thanks for the input.

    Welcome aboard!!!!!

My interests are within Morgans mostly but all things shiny and silver are my close second.

I collect whatever is eye-appealing to me, I like to collect by date/MM but some series are too expensive in todays market.

    BTW welcome to the boards.

Welcome to the Boards! Right now my main focus is Buffalo nickels and Mercury dimes. I also collect
Jefferson nickels and Lincoln cents. As far as completing any sets, those darn key date coins make it
an uphill battle. image What coins do you collect?

I like history and don't want to choose, so type was perfect. Also, toned stuff, because it's just plain pretty image

    Thats easy... I didn't!image

I found my passion in putting together a type set (trying to get one of each type of coin generally, in my case silver 179x to today). I absolutely love it. It offers alot of variety, and fits my short-attenmtion-span personality.image

My collecting interests change frequently. For example, I would become interested in Mercury Dimes. I would work on that for 6 months, but then my interests would change to Morgan Dollars. So I woul stop collecting Merc's, and collect Morgan Dollars.

Right now, I am collecting Large Cents. I started those only 2 months ago.

My point, is collect what you want!!! Don't let others dictate to you what you should collect, by saying this series is a "great value" or collect only "classic" coins because in their opinion, those coins are the only "real" coins. Everyone has their preference. Have fun, this is a hobby!!

    Weclome!!!

    Welcome aboard.

I collect many different coins, tokens, and medals but the thing that drove me
to clads was the lack of competition. It was impossible for me to keep up with
other collectors in other US coins on a tight budget. It's still possible to acquire
desirable moderns at face value or a little more.

I've tried a number of ways to collect. In the end, I just figure I'll buy cool coins and not worry about how they fit together.

I started by collecting type and found that really like old proofs esp copper. Now I collect all kinds of copper, generally before 1916.

You don't choose the coins; the coins choose you image

I really couldn't tell you why I like what I like.
  • imageimage by the way I collect whatever appeals to me.
  • Strongly considering SLQ's one/year sans the 1916, 3cent nickles,Bust half dimes, and maybe $10 Platinum Proof Eagles..trying to stay in a $100-200 per coin budget.

With a $100-$200 budget per coin there is a great deal you can do. One thing a person did that sounded interesting to me was to collect only transitional year coins. You know, like 1921 morgans and peace, 1916 barbers and mercs/slqs, 1909 indian/lincons.
  • I like collecting better date type coins. It has the variety I need to keep from getting bored with a series. But I am thinking of a Barber half set in mid grades.image

I know this is crazy but, after 40+ years in the hobby I never have decided what to collect.
It's all fun to me. I'm a sucker for a nice coin with a little history behind it.image

I collect rim toned Morgan dollars as a "specialty" but will collect just about anything including foreign coins.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

I didn't choose, Capped Bust silver chose me image
  • I have not figured out exactly what I want to collect. I am embarking on a franklin set, once i finish the recommended reading....I really like modern crap though, and always a nice looking morgan, toned or not, will always fit in nicely. I mostly like shinny silver....

I collect whatever nice coin that finds my eye. I put together a nice type set and found that I really like the seated half dimes. I got lucky getting one for less than bid on Heritage. Their picture looked blah as always, but I took a gamble and it paid off. The coin has a bright blue border and is very attractive.

I started collecting in 2001 and for about 4 years I collected a wide variety of material and have samples of most US coins back to the early 1800's in low to mid level grades. I did this as a way to learn about the different series and see what interest me.

I started collecting the large silver bullion coins (Silver Eagles, Pandas, Maple Leafs, Libertads, Kookaburras, Lunar Coins & Brittannias) and this is something I work on slowly as only a few coins come out each year. Big shiney silver good.

I have started collecting a VG Barber Half set a few months ago with ideas of Quarters and Dimes to follow after that set.

Also working on a gold type set of early 20th century coins with plans of extending to $1 & $3 coins.image

My advance buy what you like and eventually a plan will come to you.
