getting a 1952 topps mantle graded

I'm thinking about getting my 1952 Topps Mantle graded BVG 3.5 crossed over to PSA. The card is very nice, good corners, great centering, just a spider crease that is only on the front. I think it should easily grade a PSA 4 from some others I've seen. Do you think the graders would be hesitant to give it a four since BVG only gave it a 3.5? Am I better off cracking it out? What if I crack it out and PSA tells me it's trimmed/recolored etc.?

Assuming that you haven't damaged it in the process send it back to BVG. If damage occurs then send it to PRO. LOL
  • or should I cover the grade when I submit to the PSA?

How would you cover it? They'll see the flip when it's cracked out anyway.. and they'll crack it out before doing any of their gradeing..

    JUST CRACK IT OUT YOURSELF.

  • I would definitely leave it in the holder. I've submitted 3 BGS cards for crossover still in the slabs, and I've received the same grade back once and higher grades twice. It's definintely a good insurance policy to leave it in the BVG holder.
  • That happened to me with a Jackie Robinson.I thought Beckett gave me a low grade, cracked it and sent it to PSA and came back as trimmed!!

If you're worried about finding out that your BVG 52 Mantle is trimmed or doctored, maybe crossing it to PSA is not such a good idea. You'd have to pony up some extra money, but you might consider selling it as it is, then buying a PSA 3 or 4 Mantle. Even a PSA 3 would cost more than a BVG 3.5. You could try crossing in the holder to a 3, but then you'd have a horrible moral dilemma if PSA gave you bad news.
  • If you submit it in the BVG holder and PSA finds it trimmed, they WILL NOT take the card out of the BVG holder. I had this happen to me once with a BVG card. Then you have the moral dilemma of what to do with it when you get it back, but at least it's still in the BVG holder.

its still just PSA's opinion....id leave it in the BVG holder

    loth
  • send it to psa for a crossover don't risk damaging the card by cracking it open.Youre are obvisouly not happy with it in a bvg holder so what's the hurt in spending a couple bucks to send it to psa, worse scenario they say it's trimmed etc.. you get the card back still in the bvg holder & you keep it or sell it.

That's the moral dilemma: It's in the BVG holder, a marketable item, but PSA has told you it's doctored. How many people would not keep that little fact to themselves and sell it as fast as they could get a listing on eBay?

I don't think PSA is going to be telling you a 1952 Mantle card is trimmed, especially since Beckett already holdered it. That is not exactly a hot card for trimming, as only a complete moron would try trimming on because they are worth so much in any condition and trimming would ruin much of the value.

That being said, I cannot imagine PSA crossing the card from a Beckett 3.5 to a PSA 4. I would guess you'd be looking at a PSA 3 if you submit it in the holder. However, breaking it out of the holder requires putting the card at risk of damage. I would be hesitant to remove it from the Beckett holder, and I would also be hesitant to cross it over unless you had plans of selling it. I would only cross it over if you were going to sell it.

I also think that Beckett holder may wind up being worth more in the future, depending on how successful the new Beckett ownership is in expanding Beckett grading and capturing market share, which is a possibility.

Really? Wow. Yeah leave it in the holder in that case.

  • Take your card to Lowes and go to their glass cutting section. They can cut the card out no problem at all and it will cost you only a dollar.

This card was by no means a Mantle, but I have cracked out a BVG 2 and sent the card to PSA and it get a PSA 4. However, it is not the easiest thing in the world to crack out a BVG card (although very easy to crack out a PSA card).

Here is what I would do. I would try to cross (leaving the card in the BVG holder) and request a minumum grade of 4 (or 3 if you will take that). If the card does not come back your desired grade, then at least you still have it in the BVG holder, and then you could decide if you want to crack it out. If it comes back your desired grade - THEN ALL IS WELL - AND YOU COULD GIVE THE CARD TO ME FOR CHRISTMAS! imageimage

  • There is no way a spider crease will get a PSA 4. It seems anything over 2 very small creases will be knocked to a 3. Spiders are generally many creases. Again, provide a scan if you can.

What are the subgrades? A 3.5 with the right set of subgrades can be an easy PSA 4.

I've had 2 small creases drop a vintage card to a 3 though.

  • I will post the subgraded later tonight when I go home and try to post a scan as well. What is the range a PSA 4 goes for?
  • What is the range a PSA 4 goes for?

A psa 5 52' Mantle smr is $8200 a 4 goes for 65% of that, but were talking about a very unique card so expect big premiums.

  • The sale prices on these has been pulling upward in the past year or two. Solid PSA 1s sell for around 2K, 2s usually go for 3.5K, 3's are likely in the 4.5 to 5 range, so a solid 4 would prob be in the 7K range. Again, with this card it is the CARD that determines the price not the case. So get a scan up already!!!

  • Forgot to mention, the 65% idea for vintage cards is crap. For example a 5 is $100, so a 4 is 65, a 3 is about 40, a 2 would be 25. Rarely can you get the cards in the 3 range for well under half the price of a 5. maybe on 60s and newer but not the old good stuff!!

    FYI for newbies,
