Check out this eBay listing -- how can he DO THIS?

Couldn't believe my eyes when this seller claims, in the title, that the coin is a 1955 double die. Of course, he apologizes for the fuzzy photo and then shows the ICG slab which DIDN'T label it a double die. What cajones!

  • Hey guys, it technically is a doubled die. It's not the biggie, but the one referred to as the "poor mans doubled die" The 5's are doubled due to die erosion!

Poorman's doubled die is not a doubled die just uses it in it's name
Die polishing quite common. But again it is No form of Doubled die

Per Coppercoins book on Lincolns, that is not a double die.

  • The term "poor man's doubled die" has been around since 1955 and there is a coin that has that description attributed to it. Whether it was caused by whatever, it still has that designation.

Now, I did not say the guy was doing any good or bad in his auction. All I did was point out that the coin is what is referred to as "poor man's doubled die"!

    Hey Mark,

I hope that isn't the one that you are going to get for me! image

(Mark is trying to hunt down a 1955 DDO with a nice look at reasonable prices (ie....I am not rich!)

VERY common to have the shadow doubling on the last 5 of the date. And the others are correct, that is NOT a doubled die and is NOT worth any premium value over a normal 1955 cent, because it IS a normal 1955 cent. About half of them show this shadow doubling caused not by die polishing, but simple extreme die wear.
