Tax tokens: are they worth collecting?

I have run across several that were given to me about a month ago that I had forgotten about till I went to get some film out for my 35mm and found them in the film canister.

I don't think they are worth much in general, but I like to buy them when I see them. A very nice member of these boards sent me a whole bunch for free when I posted that I was interested as well.

Don't really know....I am still pretty new at collecting....these are the first that I have obtained outside of a Conder token and some Canadian coins.

Tax tokens are a lot of fun to collect. They mesh well with the WWII OPA tokens.

Some of these tax tokens can be very rare and expensive.

I think tax tokens are way cool. Are they worth collecting? Absolutely!

Who knows, maybe someday PCGS will slab them and make a registry set out of 'em -- you'll make bank if you stock up now.

These were issued by state governments to be used as coins. Their similarity to
coins was so striking that the Secret Service banned their use. Most are quite com-
mon but there are some unusual issues. Even the some of the common ones would
be difficult if there were many collectors interested in them. Only the Illinois issues
are common in unc and none are common in nice attractive unc.

Depends on how you define "worth". If you define it as being a challenge, or fun the answer is yes. If you define it as "What is the profit potential, or will the o up significantly in value?" then the answer is no. But then the question is wrong. It should have been "Are they worth investing or speculating it?"
  • Here's my tax token. It's as wide/tall as the dimeter of a quarter.
