Bench Master Set adds 3 cards

The set increased from 150 to 153 yesterday with the addition of these cards:
'81 #1 Coca-Cola Reds Team weight 2
'81 #160 Topps Sticker weight 1
'83 #229 OPC Sticker weight 1

I believe these were requested last fall and at least 10 others have been requested since then, mostly OPC, Hostess, and stickers. I think when the last gradeable item is submitted the Bench Master Set will top out at around 200 cards -- which would be a tiny set to collectors of Ryan and others who played into the '90s. I'm glad Johnny's last eligible cards were in '84!

For those who wondered (like me) if our former #1 would drop off the All-Time list once he no longer met the 90% qualifying mark for retirees ... nope, Lee's still there. Once you're there, you stay there until you're no longer among the All-Time Top 5. Something to comfort us when we're in our rocking chairs.

I requested those particular cards. Request was on Dec 15th (I checked the email) and received notification this morning. The 3rd addition was actually the 82 OPC sticker #35.

I see, Ryan. Thanks. I must have missed the '81 Coke somewhere along the way. And some cards that I requested in November are still waiting.

'82 OPC Sticker, huh? My want list grows.

Related to the 1982 OPC sticker. We are looking to add it to the Perez master list as well. They are hard to find cut correctly. I have submitted 3 Perez 82 OPC Stickers and each one has come back miscut not graded. There is a Bench in the Reds Team set for sale right now on Ebay. (Haven't figured out the link yet but here is the URL.

OPC stickers are fun. I've actually gotten a ton of nice Schmidts from Ebay over the past few years. 7,8 and 9 material. I also recently got the nicest 1982 OPC Sticker set I've ever seen in my life [seems like a silly thing to say, I know]. I submitted a bunch of the perfect star cards - I forget off the top of my head if Bench was in the bunch. I'll keep you guys in the loop whenever my grades come online.

I just had some Schmidt additions added last week from November 2004. 5 months is a long time - there is quite a few Schmidt items in the queue as we speak.

    Cheers

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

On those OPC stickers I have had luck on everything but the 1982, please do let me know if you ended up with a Perez in the submission.

Oops, I spoke too soon. Lee did get dropped from the All-Time list. I guess it took an extra day to happen. I'm sorta sad to see his set disappear from the records. It's broken up and sold off now, but it was quite a set.

He did say goodbye as far as the Bench registry, then sold off his collection. I thought he was still around collecting non-sports, but haven't seen a public posting in awhile.
  • Hey dolan, have you seen the gorgeous SGC 98 Bench rookie on Ebay? Absolutely perfect centering and eye-popping color... I know, I know, I sound like a pumper auction description but it is truly a blazer... I would imagine that you already own a raw gem or PSA 10 Bench rookie... what a '68 Topps was designed to look like...

I own a PSA 9 rookie. Maybe if I win PowerBall I can go after a 10. image

I saw the one you're talking about. It's indeed a stunner, and the bidding is already up to PSA 9 range with 5 days to go. I would say the winner is probably not hoping to cross to PSA, since an SGC 98 could easily end up PSA 9 rather than 10.

It's odd how SGC says 96 is equivalent to 9, but 98 is equivalent to 10. In the lower grades a 2 point difference is only half a grade. Why be so loose with standards when you're talking about perfection?
  • Remember, SGC does have the prisitine 100 grade... far rarer than BGS 10s. I find that while SGC is a little more lenient on centering than PSA, they grade surfaces a little harsher than PSA does. While some SGC cards may not make it into a PSA 10 holder on a crossover submission, I would bet that on a crackout submission one would have much better luck. This Bench in particular looks like it would probably get the nod no matter how you submitted it to PSA. Furthermore, I'm quite certain that there are plenty of SGC 96's that would make it into PSA 10 holders upon cracking out and submitting to PSA.

I wonder where this SGC 98 Bench RC will finish...

Oh I agree it could become a PSA 10 if the new owner is inclined that way. But I wouldn't bet several thousand dollars on it.
