Who has the coolest autograph? Your favorite autograph?

(looks wise, not your favorite player)

Yzerman's is pretty slick.. It's impressive how consistant the look of his signature is from looking at tons of signed items considering his autograph is pretty elaborate. Most players opt to do something quick was it takes them less time to sign stuff like Lebron James.

being serious, Dale Murphy has a legible and neat autograph.. i like Billy Martins, kinda plain and simple.. Derek Jeters is fancy looking, but not always legible.. Mickey Mantle's is nice..

probably quite a few more i'm not remembering right now..

  • I think Vladimir Guerrero has one of the coolest looking signatures. Kazuhisa Ishii also has a great looking signature when he signs it vertically in Japanese. Hank Aaron probably has one of the ugliest signatures.
  • Charlie Gehringer's is very nice....amazing how consistent it has been over many, many years.

Some of the best looking autos in my opinion are Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn, Jerome Bettis, and Jean Beliveau.

Here is an example of a nice Beliveau autograph on a card.

On the serious side, I collect HOF'ers and could never afford some of the guys on the sweet spot but found this very nice Ki Ki Cuyler psa/dna authenticated ball this winter:

An SS ball would be in the many thousands of dollars.

edit: my other favorite this winter is a game used ball from Brett's 3000 hit game - PSA/DNA authenticated with a letter from the Ump.

If you check the two where he signed his full name - they don't look exactly alike - this is why I find it hard to see how they can authenticate autos in some instances.
Very interesting combo - ya gotta give the guy an "A" for being creative!

Any of the older stars, take your pick...Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, T. Williams, etc. You could actually read their sigs very easily, unlike the players of today. I do agree that Gehringer's signature is pretty cool and very consistent.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Another favorite of mine is this Munson auto - did not get it personally - I'm thinking either someone got it for me or it was a mail in - auto pens were prevalent with Yankee signers in the late 70's - if you look at the end of the auto - the writing doesn't stop abruptly with a pool/dot of ink but rather is thin like the pen was lifted away from the photo - not indicative of an autopen - only way to be sure - get an "expert" opinion! image

I think the nicest looking autograph I've collected personally would be Mariano Rivera. Check out the link for an example from Steiner. Simply beautiful...something about that blue ink against a snow-white baseball.

Someone that takes pride in their sig.

One thing I love about autos is that no two are alike. I also like to analyze how autographs change over time. The most noticeable changes are when a player is young and just starting to sign autographs in volume. The other player I collect is Markus Naslund, and his has changed a lot over time. Early on, he used two lines to write his name out in full. Now he scrawls his auto into a single fluid line. It reminds me of how I've simplified my own signature over time.

Yes you're right about the two full autos not looking alike. All I can say is that he must have been writing smaller than usual in order to fit the CHIPOLA onto that tiny sticker.

I don't think there are any "cooler" than Mickey Mantle. His auto is attractive, clear and distinct. Regards.

PS - some day I'll learn how to post pics here.

  • I'd have to agree with Stone193... George Brett is my favorite. I picked up a team signature ball when he visited Oakland in the early 1980's. My Dad had a friend that got us tickets from Willie Aikins (remember him?) and Willie met us in the tunnel and he handed me the ball. One of my best ballgame memories as a kid... One of these days I need to get it authenticated (not sure if it's worth it or even possible, but I thought it would be fun to pass along to my kids some day).

  • Gordie Howe and Reggie Smith are my favorites. Reggies 1980 Topps card really captures it. I don't feel like going downstairs to scan it tonight...perhaps tomorrow.

I don't know how this thread turned it's course to babes, but gotta agree with Cubby on Harmon Killebrew. His auto is a killer.

On the Griffey JR forefront, I have seen a lot, and own a few. They are not as tight, neet and consistent as a Killebrew or a Mantle. Regards.

  • The young, fireballer for the Mariners, Felix Hernandez has a great autograph. He also has two different styles of signing. One is very flamboyant-it is on his Bowman card and the other is very plain. One time I asked him to sign a ball for me here in San Antonio and he gave me the plain signature. The next time I asked for the "fancy" signature. He smiled(his English is not very good) and he gave me the elaborate one. It will be interesting to see his autograph evolves over time. Maybe someone can post a picture of his Bowman card. Thanks

Rarely do you see an old-timer with an ugly sig. Even when they're really old and shaky, their signature might have a few extra squiggles, but still looks better than 95% of today's athletes. Penmanship is becoming a lost art.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
