I need to add this: I have been dealing in coins part-time for over 10 years, and collecting for almost 20. I am a Life Member in the American Numismatic Association and Illinois Numismatic Association, and active in a couple of coin clubs in Illinois. I have been doing eBay since 1998.

The reason that I am doing this thread is that quite a number of dealers visit this forum, and I felt that they may be looking for someone to work for them.

Cameron - I do recall that thread. However, I also have to think of my wife and what she wises to do, which would explain the preference of either Chicago or St. Louis. I know that I might be selling myself a bit short, but I know that there is a dealer between the two cities that could use a numismatist with eBay experience, for the right money and the right terms.

Question: Wouldn't most dealers insist on their employees not dealing in coins part time unless it is in an area that is totally different from the area they deal in. Sort of a conflict of interest concern?

True, but I am not giving up the thing that I have been working on for the last 10 years. And anyways, there would no conflict of interest because it would not involve them!

    1) I'm nobody's competition as I stand right now, I do not have a huge inventory or a 5-6 figure coin or coins.

    2) As I noted in my previous post, I have dealing in coins for over 10 years, part-time, and I am not willing to give up my business just because of some crazy notion that I might somehow buy a coin for my business at my employer. I know better than that. I would never "bite the hand that feeds!"

    3) Their time is their time, and mine is mine, and to do my stuff on their time is every bit as wrong as if it was the other way around.

I understand the concerns here, and I am not being bitter or argumentive about it. I just want to clear the air here.

I have no experience in the coin industry (I'm in real estate development), but this is what non-comp clauses are for specifically. You do have a conflict of interest if you are selling the same type of merchandise as the company you work for outside of the company. Of course, again, I have no clue as to how this is handled in the coin industry and it could very well be the 'norm' to allow such things.

Quick hypothetical; you have a coin in plastic which you paid $60 for. The shop you are working for has a similar coin in the same plastic and grade. This coin goes for $100 on the resale market. A buyer comes to you and expresses interest in purchasing a coin of this grade and type in plastic - which coin do you sell him? The one which the shop has which you would not personally make money from or the one you have which you would personally make $40 from the sale of. While you may have good set of ethics and would be able to properly determine which coin to sell the buyer based on where the lead came from, etc., not everyone does. This is why non-competition clauses are commonplace in many fields.

Edit: This was not posted to 'question' or 'doubt' you or your intentions, just to better clarify the reality of what others are posting. The whole "their time is theirs and my time is mine" is not a valid argument when you use your time to indirectly compete with their time, especially when now you have the advantage of intimate knowledge of their internal mechanisms to better compete with them on your time.

OK, dthigpen, I understand your point. When I was working for Jade Rare Coin, I was allowed to continue my business because I was doing their eBay auctions, and since I was not involved in any way buying or selling coins for them that what I was doing on my time would not be an issue. I have a very small, part-time numismatic business which, unlike those I seek employment with, is not brick and mortar but online and at 1-2 day coin shows in Illinois and Indiana. My company budget is way smaller than the big guys, so there is no way I would purchase a big-ticket coin or banknote.

If hired, more than likely, the prospective employer will more than likely use my eBay skills more than my numismatic skills, and thus, the non-comp situation becomes very secondary, at least in my opinion.

How many shops exist in the Chicago or St. Louis area, 20-40? If you are looking for a job, grab a phonebook and pick up a phone and make a few calls. Within one day you will know if any coin shops in those cities are looking for help.

Hello Everyone, I have received a few private messages regarding this thread, noting that I should stop posting "every 5 minutes!" One, not everyone is on this message board at the same time, and 2) those who are on the message board, from my experience, will check what was posted today! I understand that everyone who has been sending private messages is trying to be courtious, and I thank everyone for it. I will reinterate what I have been saying, though. My post is for real, it is not a joke, but some people must think I am "joshing" here. I'm not! I am looking for work in the numismatic field, and figured that a lot of dealers and collectors read stuff on this message board. I have already put my post on the NGC message board as well because not everyone goes to the PCGS board.

Boosting my post count is not an issue here. I don't care at all how big it gets. The whole point of this thread is that I am looking for work (seriously), and know that there are dealers from Chicago and St. Louis that read these threads on a daily (and, in some cases, hourly basis). Which is why I posted this thread in the likelihood that they may need someone to work for them, and rather than have someone off the street that has no iota on numismatics, find someone who already knows numismatics and need not give a person with no numismatic experience a "crash course!" And I send a message a day, not several times in a few minutes. Everyone, if you wanted to work for a coin dealer, wouldn't you at least do what I am doing right now?
