For those of you who know, occasionally a cent struck over a dime on a dime planchet will pop up. Most people call this 11 cent piece, in fact a local dealer here has a few holdered by anacs. My question is :Has anyone ever seen a dime struck over a cent on a cent planchet? I have never seen one. A local lady called me today and wants me to come look at the coin and would like to sell it?

First, I need to know if such an item exisits, and also what to look for for authentication. secondly, I know what she is expecting($$) for the coin, and would like to know an approximate value if possible? Any info would be helpful. Its probably going to be one of thoss situations where I ll have to buy on the spot or miss an opportunity?

It's basically impossible. The rule is that you can a *smaller*-than-normal planchet can fit through the coining press, but a *larger*-than-normal planchet just can't happen. There are a *very* small number of known examples (for all dates and denominations combined), and they're worth megabucks -- five figures at least.

Betcha a lot that she has a hammer job, or a glue job. If you want to save yourself a trip, ask her if the lettering on the dime reads forwards or backwards. If it was struck by normal dime dies, it would of course read forward, as normal. If it was created by sandwiching a cent between two dimes and whacking it with a hammer, the lettering with be backwards and incuse.

Don't worry about missing an opportunity -- this isn't one.
