SBA and Sac question

I'm a newbie, and am currently assembling my first set, which is PR69DCAM Kennedys.

Anyway, I was at my bank today asking for rolls of Kennedys because I was going to keep them for a few years. They didn't have any, but they did tell me they had 5 rolls of SBA's and Sacs mixed they were going to return to the Fed. On an impulse, I bought all of them, thinking I'll just save them instead.

I couldn't resist opening the rolls and looking at them. The Sacs are primarily from 2000 and appear tarnished, but not toned. The SBA's were primarily 1979, with some still having some shine.

I'm still learning about coins, but was this a "smart" purchase?

Thanks,
Brian

  • It's ok if you paid face value and it was fun to look through them so I would say yes. However, it takes some practice to get over impulse buying which can really hurt you in the long run. Just be patient and try to find a good reputable dealer in your area or perhaps other collectors. One more thing, go to your local library and find some books on numismatics and study up before buying. You'll be surprised what you will learn and may persuade you to collect differently.

  • Try looking for some type 2 SBA's in that lot. Type 2? you ask. This is why it's a good idea to read up.

Check those 1979's for the Wide Rim / Near Date variety. You can get about $5 each for them on eBay. More if they're in MS condition.

  • You mean Clear S? '79 or '81?

I've been reading up, one I thing learned quickly from this forum is "Buy the book before you buy the coin". So I bought the Redbook, Bluebook, and various other Whitman books. I'm really a sponge when something interests me.

Do you have any advice on grading coins to share? I have very little knowledge on how to tell which coins, if any, are MS versus AU.

You can't go wrong paying face value for legal tender coin. There is a great deal
to learn from looking at these. It might well be a mistake to hold on to them and
lose the opportunity to buy something which can bring more return or knowledge.

Check to be sure there isn't something interesting before you get rid of them.

Look at page 199 in the Red Book (spiral version 2005). You'll see the near date variety pictured.

Another forum member recommended "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual" by Scott Travers to me and so far I think it's great. So I'm passing on the recommendation (Thanks again Merc!).

By the way, I forgot to say in my last post image!!!

Another SBA collector, Welcome my friend. I have been collecting these bad boys or girls for over 2 years. It's tough, do not get impatient. They will be found over time. The key word is "TIME". I have (3) PF70 PCGS 79 T1's, 80, 81 T1's and 99's and (1) 79 T2 PF70. Still no 81 T2 PF70. Tons of PF69's. It will come in time. The hunt is worth everything. Be patient.

  • I don't know any coin collector that would say you were wrong paying face value for any coin.
