Man o' man.. McFarlane Figures.

The McFarlane figures always kind of interested me. I would always stop to look at them for a bit but never bought one in the fear of 'starting a new habbit'

I was taking a look at spawn.com and believe I'll have to start collecting! The new lineups coming out are awesome.. not to mentiond a few recent releases already in stores or gone by now like the NHL legends.. I'll have to get a Gerry Cheevers.. The repainted and modified figures are awesome as well.

Babe Ruth.. Ripken Jr... May's.. I'll have to get those. Link

NHL Legends.. The Gretzky's the Grant Fuhr comeing out soon.. The other goalies like Khabibulin and Bobby Orr's image coming out soon in NHL Legends 3...

Oy! I'm going to have to buy another display case from ikea.

I dig 'em. I still need to pick up the Brodeur holding the cup.
I don't keep them in their boxes. Mine are all opened for display.
I set mine up like a hockey rink with the players so it's looks like they're in action.
Kinda like an all-star game. Heh!

Hah, cool. That's what I'll be doing. Can't really enjoy them in their packaging. image

  • Anyone seen the first hockey that came out that had the Hanson Bros. from the movie Slapshot? Way too cool. I bought them and put them on display. They all hook together in a hockey rink type line up.....Cool

No, I've never seen those. awesome.

  • There are two versions of the Slapshot/Hanson Brothers. With and without blood. My Brother bought one set of each at Marcs, a discount store in Ohio. He kept the "no blood" set and gave me the "blood covered" set.

I think you got the better deal. image

I was just looking at them.. They're pretty cool. I like how they come with the boards. I'll have to win a set for myself or maybe 2 just for the extra boards..

edited for spelling errors as always..

How cool! Are these new figures? I gotta have those.....with blood of course. image

The Hanson Brothers figures came out at least 5 years ago. The bloody ones were the scarcer variations - I've heard anywhere from 10% to 25% of the production run.

The McFarlane figures are truly amazing. There seem to be paint variations for many, if not all, of the figures. The Stargell piece just screams for about six variants, as they mixed and matched those unis into some horrid combinations. Lots of the variations have home and away jerseys while some just have infield dirt and grass stains on the jerseys. I don't actually have any of the figures, but I may just pick up the Mays figure.

    Thanks for the link.

Damn, some of these custom jobs are incredible..

    Bobby Orr's 'goal'

There was another awhile back of Jacque Plante holding a bloody towel up to his face.. So cool.. this was when he got hit in the face with the puck then later in the same game wore the mask for the first time in a NHL game..

  • I'm in big trouble...

I just discovered these figures image

Do most of you guys open the packages? I'd imagine they're worth more sealed, but who could resist...

  • Those are awesome. I'm definitely going to have to get the Chipper Jones figure.

It's also fun to search Ebay for the custom figures people make. Some are just amazing. My goal is to one day win my Strat-O-Matic league and have a custom figure made of one or two of my players in their Metropolis Avengers uniforms. (This might just be the year...)

There are some great football customs, too. Some real artists out there...

I'm a collector first and formost so I rip them open and display them. It's not like they're going to worth insane amounts of money unless you have the really rare error one's or whatever the reason was for them being so scarce a few years ago.

This Ken Dryden that someone made is incredible and went for $100 on eBay last week.. He would stand exactly like that when the play was at the other end of the ice..

ahh.. dum da dum dum.. too many beers.

Nope, no hockey just a lot of basketball. I wish my parents would have thrown me in little league and hockey though I was a good athlete in school.

  • How does that guy do the custom people? Does he paint over a figurine of someone else?

I was looking at his Nellie Fox on ebay and the body and swing looks like Babe Ruth. It also appears like he attached a wad of chaw to the face. But the body is too big for Fox.

    Anyone know?

  • KnucklesKnuckles Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭
Yeah, they paint over and add some sort of clay like substance to detail the face to look like whoever they're making.

The Ken Dryden is really impressive.. The guy who made it some how moved the arms into that position and added the mask..

  • I like the McFarlane figs. I keep them sealed. I like the packaging. With these being so popular now. I wonder if PSA would get into grading these?

Ive been collecting these for a couple of years now. I have nearly all of the Yankees, and one of each from the Cooperstown collection. In football I have the Lawrence Taylor, hockey I have a couple of the goalies and a Gretzky, basketball I have the Dr. J....also have a bunch of non sports including the 1st KISS ones, Ozzie, Jerry Garcia, Angus Young, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and The 68 Elvis....somewhere boxed away in my closets are all the Austin Powers which I picked up in one bulk lot on ebay a few years back real cheap.

Since I never bothered picking up any of the rare variants all of mine are opened. The baseball in particular look great on display.
