Poll: It is the responsibility of the community to keep the US Coin and BST Forums free of fraudster

RYKRYK Posts: 35,797 ✭✭✭✭✭
Today's events got me thinking. Should I have let a certain poster pollute our boards with a deceptive ebay auction, a confrontational attitude, and a lot of bad language? My obvious reaction was to lash out against him, but perhaps I am mistaken. I am a Libertarian at heart and people should be allowed to come and go here unencumbered, so long as they do not harm any individuals or the community.

What do you think? Should we police ourselves and drive off those who might be deleterious? Or should we let everyone stay and play nicely, regardless of their agenda and behavior?

Edited to add: I welcome any comments on this topic.

Yes, but with prudence, moderation and fairness.

It is not always necessary to rush to judgement.

Yea you should hang this guy from the nearest tree for trying to sell over graded coins on these forums. Oh hell hold it for a minute. My statement was way to harsh. The forum thinks it is Okay to sell AT coins and Whizzed coins as proven in a couple of threads within the last week. Hmmm, which is worse a little over grading or some obviously messed with coins ? Untill the populace around here can figure out which is worse maybe some folks should just keep their mouth shut.

If the forum people want to help the Hobby their priorities should get in line with the REAL problems that are still present in the hobby. Everytime a AT or Whizzed coin is sold some poor Newbie will get taken later on. This is not so with a Over Graded coin in the long run.

And thats my dimes worth on this subject of people being allowed to stay here and what WE should do about them.

I felt that you were harrassing ("doing harm") to an individual in the community, someone who was not publicly offensive (though I later learned that there were some private issues).

Similarly, I thought that Bootlegger was "doing harm" to the community by similarly being publicly offensive, but also with the hackneyed "estate sale" routine.

    Judgment call.

    Yes, judgement call.

In my better judgement I decided to stop yanking the Great ones chain.

    as far as bootleg goes,

I have first hand experience with bootleg, which I will share later.

image I didn't cast a vote but just wanted to ask some questions to get some thoughts flowing. Just wondering what responsability Carol, PCGS, or the Forum Moderator's, have in this kind of thing? PM them with our concerns and thoughts, then let them handle it? This forum is owned and operated by PCGS, no? Do we have rules of engagement, so to speakimage Lee

I don't agree with 100% of what very many people on the forum say, but one thing is for certain -- this is a place where people cook in their own juices. A certain new poster in BST was well done in his own before that thread reached 10.

Responsibility? No. But feel free to try if you like.

Yes. This forum thrives if everyone contributes. We share experiences, pictures, collections and preferences. We alert each other to things that are harmful to the hobby in general, i.e. fakes, scams, thefts. When someone tells us to jump on his priceless coins, a kneejerk reaction will naturally follow. Verbal salvos follow and feelings get hurt on both sides. My biggest fear is regular members decide 'I don't need this chit' and stop contributing. Then we all lose.

Bear put it pretty well. I read the thread that you`re refering to. I`ve approached situations like that in an abrasive way only to embarress myself in the end. Nothing was really accomplished but ill-will and a sour atmosphere lingering afterwards.

Self-police? Yeah I think there is to an extent that it is healthy and protects the better side of these forums. There are children ( under 18 that is ) and really shouldn`t be exposed to the worst side. Not that it`s our responsibility to monitor them like parents but, be mindful that they aren`t like adults that have a better sense of discernment. Also there are people of all ages that are brand new to the hobby that come here and aren`t as keen on some of the pitfalls of the hobby as some of the more seasoned collectors are. It`s a delicate balance and scammers I think ought to be discourged to do their thing here. It isn`t the purpose of the forums here to do that. Scamming that is.

I think it may be extreme but I agree with RYK. I think it is awesome to have a place where only the honest and non-scamming reside. I love this place not only for the knowledge, but because I feel protected against all of that crap out there. If this enforcement is tough so be it. We should be able to buy coins from our BST forum without fear of being ripped off. We should't be spammed either. I take pride in knowing that this forum is about as scam free as possible. If you don't adhere to these guidlines then you probably don't belong.

  • Hi everybody , I'm a newbie !!
I feel compelled to answer this tread . I'am 47 yrs old , and have been enjoying this hobby since I was 7 yrs old . Collecting coins has been a hobby , not a business for me . That is why I love this forum . It is a pleasure to find so many people who share my Passion . The knowledge that comes forth when a question is asked is amazing . When somebody comes along that is not sharing that passion for the hobby , I think it shows itself fairly quickly . The biggest problem I see with this hobby , is that you can't find 09-s-vdb's , or 3 legged buffalo's in your change anymore ! The only way to collect old key coins is to lay down cold hard cash ! When cash is involved , BUYER BEWARE........ I don't think this forum or any other can rid the world of CHEAT'S...... It's just a fact of life . In the 2005 red book there is a good read on page 9 .... "Rare Coin's As An Investment" . We all like getting a score on an under graded coin , that's part of the thrill , and sometimes we over pay...... but that's okay ... just hold it long enough and you will get your money back ! But above all else don't loose " The Passion" !!

I think there is a place for policing one's community. However, sometimes it is easy to get carried away. My neighborhood has a watch group but I would rather call the police when someone is breaking into homes rather than have a vigilante neighbor "come to the rescue".

If you don't like what is offered, just don't buy.

I know many here fight for the protection of the unknowing, but how else do they learn? Gotta fall off the bike at some point. Hopefully its only a scrape and not a broken leg.

I think it should be buyer beware, and it is up to the buyer to check out and understand what he or she is buying. At the very least, if they are not sure they should ask a friend or colleague's opinion of the coin.
