Anyone want to see this heartbreak of an 1887 1/2 crown?

I received it today only to find all the hair lines were someone thought it needed a good polishing. If it wasn't for that this would have been a choice coin seeing there is little wear. The image the Ebay seller had of this coin you couldn't detect the hair lines. It wasn't until I had in hand and got it lights that I saw the cleaning. I paid less than $20 for it but it still is a heart break to see this done to such a finely struck coin.

I just found it on ebay. There is only the slightest hint that the cleaning took place on one of the reverse pictures shown in the listing. You can see it on the blackening on the Irish harp, which is a telltale sign of polishing.

I have an 1890 crown like that ... looks like some fool used a Brillo
pad on it, so now it's a pocket piece.

  • They should have left it alone. Ah well the mentality for the modern sellers is make it bright and shiney so it will sell better, that is all fine and good for jewelry and flatware but for coins its not a good thing.

Put it in a leather pouch with some BB's and carry it around for awhile...it will take off most of the hairlining and leave you with a lower grade coin that looks halfway decent.
