Acetone dip on SMS Coins.

Can you dip SMS coins in acetone like proof coins to get rid of haze?

Acetone will not remove haze unless it is an organic haze. But acetone is safe on all coins. Although there have been a few people who said it can have issues with copper coins. 100% pure acetone.
  • Acetone will turn a Lincoln Cent 'pinkish'. I had a hazy Lincoln Proof, dipped it in 100% Acetone for about 5 seconds, came out really clean,...................... and pink image

Why not create a forum specifically for this and other questions that arise so frequently that newer board members can just be directed to the link. It is just a thought. -Dan

Why? They're asking the same questions I asked when I came here, that had been asked before, and I wasn't given a link to an already asked question. The personal answer at the time of the question carries weight.

By the way, your thought has been mentioned many times before. Why didn't you do a search?

Thanks for your imput. I was going to dip a SMS lincoln cent that is a cameo. But now I won't. I think I might send it to NGC to see if they can do anything with it by means of conserving it. Though never did this before. The lincoln cent also has small black carbon spots if this is the correct term.
Thanks again for your help. I might have ruined the lincoln by dipping. I will do more searches next time also.

Well, copper is a tricky metal to work with regardless. NCS may be able to help, you never know.

NCS is the way to go. GooGone and MS70 both work on copper as well, but if you have a cameo copper it is worth the few dollars and the time to let someone who has done it before do it first. If you want to learn try some cheap coins first.
