PCGS Value Guide Prices???

Hello All -

I realize the PCGS value guide is just that, a guide, and that all prices contained therein should be taken with a grain of salt.

However, I have noticed a particular irregularity, that I would appreciate any forum member feedback on:

I have 1914-D gold issue year set that I don't plan on selling anytime soon, but occasionally enjoy looking up the values on:

Until a year ago, a 14-D Saint in MS63 commanded a premium over the 14-S, both in the price guide and on ebay, (presumably because there are more than twice as many 14-S's accounted for in the pop reports.) Then, the 14-D took a bizzare dip in the price guide - and got priced the same as a 14-S. At the time it seemed like an error to me, especially since when the price first dropped, it dropped to the same entered price as an MS62! Eventually they adjusted the price of the MS62, but to this day in the guide, the 14-D and 14-S have the same price in MS63, and now they are even selling for the same money on Ebay!

I have tried sending PCGS a few emails, but I always get an automated response saying "the guide is just a guide" etc. etc..

Another coin in my set is the $10. Last week, a 1914-D was listed at $1,800.00 in MS63, substantially higher than the 1914. Then today, both 14 and 14-D in 63 are listed at $925.00! According to Heritage, a PCGS 14-D in MS63 sold for $1,850.00 last month - before that, they have been selling for between $1,300 and up for the past year.

What gives?? What have they got against gold 14-Ds?

Is there anyway to contact PCGS since this truly seems like an oversight?

It would be good to do so before their guide influences prices on this issue like it did on the Saint.

Thanks in advance for your insights -

send an e-mail copy of your post to dh@collectors.com (that's David Hall). He seems to put a lot of effort into keeping the Value Guide accurate.

    When in doubt, don't.

The price guide is way way inaccurate in many areas. Some prices are multiples too high, some are multiples too low.
