Ok, now I'm really confused...what makes this a "Peg Leg" Ike?

CoinHuskerCoinHusker Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭
This auction just ended on eBay and for the life of me the "R" looks like it has a serif on it's leg. So, what makes this a "peg leg" other than it's holder? image

In another thread on the Registry forum it was mentioned that there are 2 varities of the "peg leg" variety. What is the difference between the two?

I am really confused and would really appreciate any help to educate me. I need it! image

I just posted this on the registry forum but it's a little slower than this forum, so I'm am posting it here as well. Any help to educate me to understand what to look for is appreciated.

I think we are just talking about the left lower part of the R just above the head

if there is only the serif on the right bottom (of the straight left line of the R)
then it is a peg leg

if the serif shoots out on both sides of the bottom then it is normal

    _|_ normal |_ peg leg

the picture on the auction is hard to tell - have to take ANACS word for it

I know about the serif, and other characteristics to look for but this coin looks like a normal Ike with a normal "R" to me.

I wish Supercoin had his page on Peg Legs still up. It had great pics and information.

Does anyone have any pics they could post? Squared leg, tapering leg, etc., a picture would be worth a 1,000 words.

    Thanks!

Ok. I was reading this and decided to look through mine. Here comes the interesting part. Out of 6 Ikes 1 was a peg leg (and not one of the usuals) Its a 1972 D and both of the pictures are of the same coin. But why does one look like a peg leg and the other not? I would not think lighting could give or take away something like that. imageimage
  • Huh, I had never heard of htat one before! This is exactly what I love about this forum!! image
