OK, now I'm really confused...what makes this a "Peg Leg" Ike?

This auction just ended on eBay and for the life of me the "R" looks like it has a serif on it's leg. So, what makes this a "peg leg" other than it's holder? image

In another thread it was mentioned that there are 2 varities of the "peg leg" variety. What is the difference between the two?

I am really confused and would really appreciate any help to educate me. I need it! image

The serif is missing on the " R " of liberty.

Really? That coin looks like a normal Ike to me, with a normal "R". There's nothing about the "R" on that coin that looks like what I have read or seen pictures a "Peg Leg" Ike looking like.

A better picture would help, but if I had to go from that picture, I would vote Peg Leg. The missing serif is on the left leg.

You are right Brian. Other details of this coin would be : Liberty, in god we trust, and part of the hair show doubling. Sego is also right about this coin : it's an entirely different die.

The two different " Peg Legs " are : one looks like the 1972-S, ( Boxy Letter on left leg of the letter R)
The other " Peg Leg " looks more like a pirates peg leg , with the left of the letter R getting slimmer, close to the bottom. I have never found, or owned one higher than MS 65. So, if found in MS66, you would have a very rare coin !!!

Are those differences referenced in any way? ie. the Wexler Ike book? Does anyone have any pictures of the differences that they could post to help educate us all on what to look for? image

Thanks for the 2 references. I hope you guys don't think I'm beating a dead horse here but I still don't see what made the coin in this auction a "peg leg"? I've looked at all the pics mentioned, plus Supercoins pics on the variety. The "R" on this coin looked normal to me. None of the characteristics of what I've seen and read one should look like.

What convinced you guys it was? Anything other than the "R"?

I'm just trying to learn and asking questions is the fastest way for me to do that.

    Thanks!

    I was the underbidder,....Mass Screw outsniped me!image
Actually, I was purely on the ANACS designation. It really doesn't look like one from the pics,
but the pics aren't that great anyways. IF it is one, I doubt it is the scarcer "Fading Peg Leg".
That is why I didn't bid that high.
Mass Crew may have gotten a great deal.....who knows?! I think a nice 63 71-S Peg Leg should
    fetch at least $150.
I think the other one on eBay is up to $177+?

    Happy Hunting!

I'll SEE (note emphasis on SEE) if I can post a better pic on it's arrival. I also didn't realize there was more than one kind of 71S pegleg...

    Do you have a link?

    Don't worry, I'm not bidding.
  • image Massscrew,
The item number is # 3962032747. There is also a 1972-D Peg Leg in
    PCGS- MS 64 !
The 1972-D Peg Leg is seldom seen above MS 63.
Recently, I bought a 1971-S Peg Leg from a dealer who thought that they only came in proof !
Both of these peg legs are undervalued !

The item number for the 1972-D Peg Leg is # 3962038046

I don't think 72-D Peg Leg is so rare. I saw some MS66 in the last 6 months.

Tell us where they are !! I have almost a full roll of the 1972-D Peg Leg, However, they grade out MS 63 OR LOWER !!
I have been looking for the last 5 years for the 1972-D Peg Legs, and the highest grade that I have found them is Ms 65. I f you know where a Ms 66 is, several people would be interested.

Okay, so what's the difference between the one that I won, and the one that's on Ebay now:

    On Ebay now

    One that I won
  • imageimageMassscrew,
The one that you purchased is not the rare " fading peg leg " The coin that you bought is the " full peg leg ". It is still a valueable coin.
Your coin is listed in Coneca Attribution Ike Guide as : ODV-III, Full Peg Leg.

  • imageMassscrew,
Here is a description of the coin that you purchased : (ODV-III )
The forehead furrows are either absent or weak and indistinguishable. The lower left serif of the B of LIBERTY has a tail. The area above the designer's initials blends into the neck. there are no marks left or right of the designer's initials. The extreme upper left hairline consists of a pattern of valleys, two of which intersect with later strikes being indistinct. There are faint furrows on the neck.
The best way to determine the difference beteween the two different peg legs is that the left leg on the letter " R " On the " fading peg leg " resembles a pirates peg leg, and starts to "fade " at the knee, and appears to fade away. The " full peg leg " has a " boxy " peg leg ( like the 1972-S )
The cross reference for the " fading peg leg" is : DDO-007, and this is listed in the blue Ike reference.

They both appear to be ODV-III, Full Peg Leg coins. It's just that you paid much less than the coin is worth !! Both are valueable coins !!!

You paid a little less than the coin is really worth !! I own a total of 5 peg legs, and I have been looking since 1994 for them, not a lot, considering that i currently own 57 1972-P Type # 2 coins. The peg legs ( either type in business strike ) is at least 20 times more difficult than the type # 2 !!!!!
Down the road, you will be glad that you bought that coin. I did not bid myself because I knew one of the bidders, and did not want to bid against him.

Brian, he really did, the true value of that coin is $ 325.00 to $ 350.00 in MS63. IN 1997, THERE WERE ONLY 2 EXAMPLES FOUND, AND ONLY A HANDFUL SINCE !!!!!
