What's wrong with whizzing?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
Perhaps I should clarify. There is nothing wrong with some kinds of whizzing and in fact it is a great hardship if one can't.

But.....for coins.

A whizzed coin would be more appealing to chimps and new collectors. And after all, what's gonna be left after all the old collectors are gone? NEW collectors.

Treat em like cars. Start all over from scratch. Buff it to a high shine and WAX it.

What a PURDY set.

Should conduct an impartial test: Whiz a set and set it and an original dingy, toned old set next to it at ...ohhh..... a venue like Walmart (to get a good cross-section of America) and have the people VOTE.

That way it would be democratic and thus ........... good. image

Or stay hidebound and slavish to originality and settle for the heartbreak of bodybags and the scarcity of original coins.

WHIZ NOW !!!!

Fixed up large cents sell soooooooooo much better at a flea market than those ugly old brown ones.

Actually one of the prettiest Morgans I ever sold was whizzed. Talk about frosty looking, she looked like a proof, well until you looked at her with a magnifing glassimage

Boy...have I got some coins for you!

It seems that every time I go through a bunch of coins, it's the most valuable ones that have been abused the most.

  • I started a few new coin collectors at work in the past year. I told them my thoughts about never cleaning coins.....One of them was scrubbing with silver polish some .60 cent Buffalos that he picked up at a small show in Miami.......Some people just have to have that SHINE!!!........I tried

If it's a coin that I know I will never be able to afford in an unaltered condition, I have no problem buying a 'whizzed' or 'cleaned' coin. Many times, that may be the ONLY way I'll ever be able to afford it, so why not?
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

  • What's the difference between whizzing and brushing an old copper with a camel's hair brush, and endorsed EAC practice?

Similar to those zinc plated 1943 steel cents. They did look very appealing to the new coin collector's eye.

    I listen to your voice like it was music, [ y o u ' r e ] the song I want to know.

    image

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.
