I understand the Royal Mint is also offering a special collectors set. For £129.95 you get a silver proof coin, a brown paper bag large enough to cover Camilla's face, a brown paper bag with the Royal Arms large enough to cover Charles' face and a weeks dose of penicillin (just in case).

Sad to say, the Royal Mint is becoming like the Franklin Mint: a coin for every occasion. Many (but not all) of the commemoratives in the last twelve years have been an absolute travesty, especially the ones that are depicted on the 50p. Then there is that 50th year £5 piece.

That's why all of my modern proof sets are now in the hands of others - the last bunch were boxed up and shipped out of here yesterday.image

I think that cartoon is hilarious. It is also not too far off the mark of what might actually be put on a coin nowadays.

They are getting carried away. In days of old (before Elizabeth II) there were only two commemorative Crowns issued, one in 1935 and one in 1951. Now there is something new every time you turn around. I would like to see a middle ground where there are only one or two special issues per year.

I would agree. One or two would be manageable. The only moderns I like at the moment are the Britannias - they are quite well done.

I agree, they are issued in limited numbers and have tasteful designs. My fear is that greed will take hold and they will start issuing several commemorative designs per year. At that point I would stop collecting those and sell everything except my 1997 set.
