Time for the scammers to switch it up from the 'my grandpa died and left these to me' routine with the 'I found these in the floor when doing renovations allah the two legit recent instances.
Just curiosity from a non-baseball collector. Why do people refer to the 1952 Topps Mantle as his "rookie" card? Didn't he have a 1951 Bowman card?

Good grief. Don't these people have any imagination? Is there some reason why these people are not being reported to consumer fraud division of their DA's offices (or US attorney's offices)? It seems like one or two successful prosecutions would crimp their style.
"Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well."
is in excellent condition? I am no expert in sports or sporting cards for that matter.
his tim brown card he has listed right now says:
Tim Brown is with out a doubt one of the greatest wide receiver to ever play ine the NFL. This is a very rare card, and becomes even more rare with a BGS grading of Gem Mint 10.
Sounds like he knows a little something about sporting cards. Notice he doesnt have any other cards up for auction from his 'renovation find'
2 vaporous IDs bid this lot up to its conclusion. Neither have won anything in about a year, both have a combined feedback of 3 and they've both been registered for some time - very similar to the sellers profile.

No you see if he bids on his auctions then when people see that in his feedback he can get the customer very comfortible and scam the hell outta them in the future.....lets keep an eye out on this seller and his multiple ebay names.
starsforless seems to be a supplier to scammers for many of these '52 Mantle unauthorized repros that lack the word "reprint" on the reverse. He sells them for $100-$150 while trying to cover his ass with "I'm selling it as a reprint." He hints it might NOT be a reprint and plays up the absence of the word "reprint." (SCAMMERS TAKE NOTE! is what he's saying). But he's technically on the right side of the law, I guess.
The buyer (usually somebody with very low feedback, like this one) turns around and tries to make a profit by ratcheting up the "I don't know but I think it's real" angle. He makes up a story about grandpa or finding it under the floor, and leaves out the fact that he just bought it from a guy who sold it "as a reprint." We just had another thread about someone else who got a Mantle repro from starsforless and promptly tried to sell it as a find from a barn sale. Along with a Goudey Ruth, I believe.
Sometimes the card gets dirtied up or creased to make it look like a legit raw Mantle. I wonder how many starsforless deals we would find in the histories of these Mantle / Ruth scammers. Apparently selling repros that aren't identified on the card as repros is a profitable business. The reprint is worth a dollar. What adds the extra $100 in value to scammers is the lack of the word "reprint."
hey,you should email starsforless and see if he'll use your prase "supplier to the scammers" it is really funny how people will still bid on these obvious fakes----his discription says: NO GUARANTEES EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CARD DOES NOT SAY REPRINT ON IT ANYWHERE AND CARD MEASURES 2 5/8 X 3 3/4 JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER 52 TOPPS CARDS.
I'M SELLING THE CARD AS A REPRINT OR AS-IS SINCE IT HAS NOT BEEN AUTHENTICATED OR GRADED BY A THIRD PARTY. I BOUGHT THE CARD AS A REPRINT.
now he should add: attention idiots: this still could be a real 52 topps card as i might be the dumbest guy in the world and have a real card here!

Right now someone has to pay the closing EBAY fees on a $4500 sale!!!.
Seems like alot of money to build feedback..... ($130 +)
I hope he doesn't pay himself via PAYPAL!!! LMAO WTF

That's hilarious. Bidders with feedbacks of 1 and 2 jacked it up from $225 to $4800 at the end. Now he's guilty not only of trying to scam, but shilling too. It's some consolation that he is the winning bidder on his own card, which means some real person isn't. But still he should be NARU before not too long.
To be sung to the tune of Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself"
"Bidding with myself"
On the floor of Tokyo Or down in London town to go, go With the record selection With the mirror reflection I'm bidding with myself
When there's no-one else in sight In the crowded lonely night Well I wait so long For my love vibration And I'm bidding with myself
Oh bidding with myself Oh bidding with myself Well there's nothing to lose And there's nothing to prove I'll be bidding with myself
If I looked all over the world And there's every type of girl But your empty eyes Seem to pass me by Leave me bidding with myself
So let's sink another drink 'Cause it'll give me time to think If I had the chance I'd ask the world to bid And I'll be bidding with myself

The reason people bid on this junk because there are so many people out there who think they can get over on someone, they think they can get something for nothing. I see 'deals' like this and wish I could scream out 2 overused (but still very good nonethless):
1) there's no such thing as a free lunch; 2) if it sounds like too good a deal, it probably is.
But the greed of most people trying to get a very, very expensive item cheaply overwhelms common sense most of the time.
Credit to eBay for booting him before he could pay the fees on this fake sale. They knew that would give him time to scam someone for real, if they waited for the billing cycle.
Axtell I would just add to your basic rules of smart eBaying:
3) If a 1952 Topps Mantle (or 1933 Ruth or 1910 Cobb) is not graded, there is a very good reason. NOBODY would willingly give up 90% of their sale price by declining to grade such a card. Either it's been rejected by PSA or the seller knows it WOULD be.

Seller just bought a Mantle Rookie reprint a few weeks ago.
