Question about Lang's buffalo nickel book

BBNBBN Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭
I am going to start and plan to spend the next two decades putting together a slabbed buffalo set. I've read that Lang's book is the end all for buffalo info. Before I spend a bunch of money on a book that I really don't know what info is in it could someone tell me what info is in it? What does it talk about as far as buffs, etc.? Thanks

It is a good book and for the price of one of the sixty plus slabbed coins you plan on buying it is well worth it.

The book lists each date and mintmark (including proofs) on a separate page with varieties, strike characteristics and availability. There is also some history of the design.

Anyone collecting Buffs, whether circ or slabbed, should buy this book. Highly recommended ... particularly if you are unfamiliar with Buff strike characteristics. This book will let you know which issues typically come weakly struck ...

I have Lang's book and I've got to tell you it's OUTSTANDING!

It starts off by giving a history of the designer and the design which is very detailed. But without a doubt the most valuable part is were Lang takes each date and mint in the series and discusses strike, luster, toning, rarety, price variation, varieties, etc.

I can't imagine a better format than the one Lang used in this book. On a scale of 1-70, I'd give the book a 68+. If you're going to collect Buffalo nickels, you'll never find a book that comes close to offering what Lang's book does.

Thanks for the info guys! I have one right now, a 1938-D MS66 and plan on saving for a few months and getting one in the $500-700 catagory. I really want to make this a nice set so that's why I'm going to drag this out over 20-25 years. Don't know how long I'll stick it out, but hope I do I guess I could spend that next few months reading and educating myself on them. Been collecting coins for about 5 years, but lately I've gravitated to buffalos. I may work on unslabbed circulated Bust Halves as a side project. Those are my second favorite coins. image Thanks again!
