I have been searching for raw franklin cameo proofs for submission to PCGS or NGC w/out luck. Where do you locate them? I have been to shows in the MI area and all I see is junk. Any secrets for success???

Welcome to the boards. To address your question, it's all about looking at as many coins as possible and trying to find "fresh" material that hasn't been looked at by 50 others before you get a shot. Good luck. It isn't easy.

go through some odd 20-30k sealed deals a month
suck out on 85-90% and jackpot on the 10-15%
rambling around here/there for a fw here/there is PEEnuts
having packs just arrive after 20+ yrs of autopilot dealer care packs never having to discuss a thing is the nitch
all you gotta do is pay MORE than the rest of the so-called and you are IN

just pay more than val, rick and a few other weaker sealed bulk buyers.....
they wont even bother making a call.
lots of, or should i say hundreds of "shop dealers" buy em at 30 to 40 back
BUT most dont know how to handle those 25,50,100,250 mint sealed boxes grandpa joe left to the wife, etc
so they send em where they should go...
ONLY outer mint sealed outer boxes with the lables and all in tact
not the others chumped out scheming resealed in replica evelopes by the 10's,20's,25,50, and 100's you see all over
jokebay....
heh....step up and swing boys
You may be too close to Chicago to have much chance.
Seriously, though, it can take perseverance and looking for fresh sets. Once they've been
on the market for a while they tend to get cherry picked. Talk to dealers and let them know
you're looking for fresh sets and pay a premium. You've got to get on their A list.
You can also shop around on e-bay and the like but this is more complicated. Check photos
of actual coins for sale and watch for clues that sets might be original. It helps if you can
trade or sell some rejects since you will get at least some.

yeah, resealed already checked box sets, steamed tape redone and the jillions of allegedly sealed 55-64 peppered with a bonus or 2 to make it look like "oh well, got a little sumpim. must have been legit just not my day...
ha ha ha ha ha heh heh hehe hehe.......oooooooooh yes, the wonderful world of canivery
Well it takes money to make money and cameos. I am sure russ and marty spend their share. In the end, unless you can make those supreme DCAMs, it is a costly seach. The fun is in the hunt though. Sure you can buy a cameo in a holder but it's more fun finding it yourself because you know the story behind each and every Dcam.
And doop, no offense meant but it is really hard to decipher what you are saying.

I have no idea how much Doops buys, but I think his buying approach is sound enough. My best deals have been the old stashes that walk into the local shops. When I find them, I'm usually just ahead of them being shipped to a wholesaler or to Coin Vault. If I were serious enough about it to play hard, I'd be travelling to the shops in the south giving him a run for his money. Thank goodness it's just a hobby for me. I expect like most businesses it's pretty tough and the competition isn't asleep.

<< <i>In his words, over the last twenty years he's established a reputation with many small dealers with which he does business as someone who'll pay a premium for sealed box deals that walk into their shops. Most dealers try to buy these boxes 20-30% back of bid from the public. He pays them a little more than Val (Webb) or Rick (Tomaska) are willing to pay (probably ask), so over time the shop owners become conditioned to just call him first and sell him boxes. 10-15% of the real sealed boxes yield submittable coins, the rest do not and are resold. Many of the "sealed" sets offered to the public are reseals, and are sprinkled with just enough good material to fool the buyer into thinking he bought a sealed set and was just unlucky. >>
Oh ok. Gotcha
Well I hardly have the funds to execute such a strategy but kudos to you if you do. If everyone keeps this up there will be nothing left. lol.

Uh...... yeah.....
Seriously, finding nice quality raw cameos can be a lot of work- people have been picking over sets for many years, and even when you find something, you have to be prepared for one-sided cams, hairlines, spotting, etc. I spend a decent amount of time searching for nice cameos in old holders- coins that might have been undergraded or undesignated. You can sometimes find nice cameos in holders that sell for less than pcgs plastic......
