53 topps Matthews/ grade ??????

I picked this up today at the Fort Washington show. Any thoughts as to the possible grade ?

This is the first time i'm trying to attach a file so bare with me.

  • Great that is what i was hoping for. I just got done going over it with a 10+ lupe and it looks great ( no wrinkles ).

I also grabbed up about 40 52 bowmans that look to be about 7's thru 9's ( fingers crossed ) I thought there were some great buy's.

The card has great eye appeal,
but because of the corner and edge wear I'm thinking more like a 6.

    Maybe a 7 tops ...

  • i have a mathews psa 6. As long as there are no surface wrinkles, that baby is at least a 7.

Nice card. Looks like an 8 if it doesn't have any of the
    crap listed above.
  • I paid $150.00 for it. The seller was asking 220.00 but wanted to make some deals. Like i said it seemed to me that there were some good bargins to be had from some of the smaller guy's. Dealers like 707 ( leon ) and the others were a differant story all together.

I will post the results along with the 40+ 52 bowmans.

  • My favorite Eddie Mathews trivia ...

Mathews is the only player to have suited up for the Braves in all of their geographic locations.
He was a Boston Brave, a Milwaukee Brave and an Atlanta Brave!

  • Nice mathews,as earlier stated as long as the surface is clean I think it could bring an 8.Card exhibits nice centering for a 53' topps

Scott, very nice pickup. If it pulls a 6 then you have a true Ex/Mnt card. It could grade higher too.

    Steve

In any event that is his 2nd yr card is over 50 years old and for that price you got a bargain IMO.
    Good for you.

Looks like a pretty good card but due to you scanning it to stay under 50kb, it's hard to tell if the corners are soft or not?
If those corners are pretty sharp (for a 53) and the black area hasn't been "touched", it could border on 8 but I don't know. My thought - the guy coulda got it graded and if 8, he has a 500$ card...just a realistic thought.

  • Mike,Win and the rest,

Thanks for your insight. I would tend to agree and assume a 7 and hope for an 8+. The guy i bought it from had no graded stuff and said all he did was travel around texas and louisiana buying collections from people at flea markets.
I also picked up a bunch of 52 bowmans for my set. All appear to be at least 7's. I have to look for his card and try to stay in touch as he does not have a web site.

Over all i got some great stuff and thought the show was set up very well. I will be sending the 52's in to PSA and the Matthew's off to GAI for possible resale.

Why are you not sending the Mathews to PSA for grading?
  • Looking closely at it i was hoping for a 8.5. I've noticed ( this will start a debate ) that high grade vintage HOF cards seem to do very well in the GAI holder's. The .5 could very well account for a substantial premium over SMR on this particuler card. It is a gamble but for what i paid i think it's worth it. Hey nothing ventured nothing gained.

Also as we all know everyone here has there own thoughts on the great grading debat. But i have been sending a few older things to GAI and have been very happy with them. I believe they are the same quality grade wise as SGC and PSA. No doubt lower grade vintage does better in PSA but i feel the higher end cards in high grade do very well in the other holder.
