Believe it or not I am about to accept one on consignment very shortly? Tuesday, in fact, Do you know anyone wanting to buy the whole set or should I break it up to maximize the consigor's value?
Well, at one point it paid to break it up and that is why 100+ sets have been broken up, but I am not sure about if it is cost effective to break up a set now. You probably know I have been keeping track of this on eBay for 5 years now, and I can account for exactly 100 broken up sets, but I am sure there are more. Complete opened sets have been seling for about $1,000 but I saw one sell for $2,000 a few months ago. The guy claimed that the Mystery CArd was still sealed even though the set had been opened. It is very easy to re-seal Mystery cards and claim it had never been opened. Some collectors are so gullible. The only way I would buy a Sealed set is if the soft blue pinstriped box was shrink wrapped which is inside a thick White Upper Deck cardboard box which is sealed with tape that says Upper Deck on it.
Have you ever actually seen the set? It's beautiful.
There were only 500 sets. All sets had the number laser engraved in the mahogany box they were stored in and on the cards themselves, except the "Mystery" card which were hand numbered. For example, set #400 had 400 laser engraved on the box and 400 engraved on each card.
Very early on I started to keep track of what sets were broken up and sold on eBay, and I would occassionally post the list on this board (I keep an Excel spreadsheet). Collectors were buying the box to use for jewelry boxes, cigar humidors, etc., you name it. The individial cards went to separate collectors. My contention is that these sets will never be able to be put back together again thus driving up the price in the future. Some day when those little Derek Jeter's collecting fans grow up and they have disposable income they will want one. The rarest "Mystery" card is the Thurman Munson "Cut" signature which there is 2 cards and I own one:
The least rare are the Derek Jeter autographed "Bat" card which there are 100. There also is a jersey card which there are 100.
Set, they have taken a beating. I think these collections are a steal at $2,000 or less. If you compare it to the beating the 1986 MJ Fleer took, not as bad..
What was the orig. price of the Master sets? I would love to have one. If they ever fall to under $1,000 I just might buy one and pop out the Yankees log and put a Bo Sox one in.
allen, Shop at Home was selling them for $6,000 but one could readily buy a new one when they first came out for between $3,000 and $4,000. I am not sure if UD ever gave a Suggested Retail Price.
