Vacume Packed Mint Rolls - What do you think of this?

I was at a bar yesterday and struck up a conversation with a local coin dealer that I know. I asked him if he knew of anyway to keep his Mint rolls from tarnishing over time. His answer was one that I never expected. Vacume Pack Sealed rolls. The same thing you see on TV for cheese and meat and vegitables. What do you think of this idea? Sounds like it would have some merit to it.

Yeah, the only issue is having enough rolls to justify purchasing the stuff to vacuum pack.

If it has merit, I was thinking of bringing some of my rolls down to the local meat packer. They do this all the time and I think he would do this for me at no cost. Just wondering if this was just another stupid idea or not. Sounds like it is a good one since all the air would be sucked out until you opened the pack up for sale at a later date.

  • I do this same thing with some of my coins for long term. I also do this with rolls I sell on ebay and raw coins.

Well if you go with the kind that can store food then there is no PVC in the bag. Vacuum sealing using something like foodsaver is only partially effective. The seal isn't meant to be permanent.

How about putting the original rolls in a Quarter tube and then Vacume sealing them? Still think the plastic problem could happen?

Why worry about toning? I have a roll of Sunshine Mint 1 oz rounds from 1983 and they are as fresh as the day they were struck.

Isn't toning sought after now-a-days anyway? If the material is currently non-toned wouldn't it remain that way for at least half a century anyway? By then most of will be long gone and the kids would have sold the stuff for a fraction of its true value whether it iwas toned or not.image

Interesting idea. Have 10 ASE(one from each year) Rolls in original govt green tops that I would like to keep fresh as possible.
