Observing Toned Coins

What would you say are the best lights made to observe toned coins under?
What type of lights make the colors on a coin really dazzle when casually
observing a toned coin?

The best consumer lights on the market to observe coins are the Sylvania Daylight Plus bulbs. They blow the Reveals away.

  • I like useing no light at all.It makes me feel as though I work for a bottom feeder grading service.
  • since I am sorta in he horticulture "plant growing" hobby,I know much about lights......

The best overall lighting you can use for getting the full toning without tone falsing "yes certin shades of lights cause red/green/blue tones that are not really there, try a
Metal Halide lighting system, even though the wattage a size and restrictions of the light outweighs the flexabilty of use ,it would bring the full toning out more than any other type, since the bulb itself is in the blueish/white spectrum and closest to the sun it would be the best, and also the most honest way to capture the real full tones....
But notevery one can afford a 400 dollar lighting system,...
I would say floresent bulbs, since they are not in the RED/Orange spectrum that falses tones, but rather a neutral white light..

The worse you can use is flood lights, they cause falsing especialy if thier the back yard type of bulb,.....

the more white/blue type of bulb will have a better and basicly true and not exagerrated toning....

    hope this dosent confuse anyone......lol,
I Guess I ws wrong ,But I was mistaken....

I use a 60W clear tube light in my desk lamp. The clear seem to give off more light but I don't know if the clear or frosted bulb shows truer colors. There is a Reveal 40W available and the store display sure makes it look better than the standard bulb. I am wondering if the 40W Reveal would be better than my 60W clear tube. The Reveal bulbs cost twice as much so they must be better. image

    Anyone care to comment?
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

see the thing is that both bulb you talk about are incondesent, they both have very very bad spectrums of light, try a florecent typr of bulb and ill bet you have better results

  • I don't know for casually observing a coin, but the best I've found for pictures is an Ott-lite, recommended by some members here. Still lurking and learning - and waaaaiting for my copy stand!imageimageimageimageimage
