Question about buying a 1968 card set

If an eBay seller who has 110 Positive feedbacks with no negatives had an auction for a set which ended with no bids and he agreed to sell it to me, do you think it would be safe to buy it from him outside of eBay? We are talking about $1,100.

I don't think he has to go thru that much trouble - I believe the guy can send someone an invoice to be paid thru paypal and get the same protection?
