I was guessing 1857 before I looked at the picture. It seems most half dimes from 1856-1857 come with weak dentils. No damage here, that's just they way they come.
Pretty common. I think they used the dies until they wore out. I have one with a similar look (1856). the rev has had so much die polishing that the leaves on the wreath are starting to disappear.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I could see that happening either when it was put into a bezel or removed.
