Because it's older, more attractive to the eye, has better players, and is harder to find in good shape. The high series cards are also a big difference.
Yeah, all the sets up thru 1973 (I think) were issued in series, and the last series was issued at the end of the year when everybody had started to lose interest. So they cut down production of those cards (or at least I think that's the reason; I could be mistaken). That's why if you look through Beckett you'll see that all the pre-74 sets high number commons are worth so much more.
Plus the 70 set has players like Mays, Banks, Clemente, and early cards of Reggie and Ryan. Plus Munson's RC.
What's odd about the 1970 set is that the high series cards are much much easier to find in PSA 9 than the earlier series cards. I had a few high series PSA 9 commons, and I didn't get much for them on eBay. One only went for $2!
