Help with 74cc, 90cc Lib. $20

Am attending a local auction. It is obvious by the coins and tokens that will be offered that the collector traveled alot. I am interested in two coins only, 74cc and 90cc Lib. $20.00. Would like to know if these were often counterfited, and if so how to detect a fake.

Rarely counterfeited. Matter of fact, I'm not sure I've ever encountered a counterfeit Carson City $20. Both are considered common dates among the CC $20's.

Depending on condition what would be the average price in AU?

Raw low end AU 74CC $20's that haven't been cleaned should run in the 1500 to 2000 range if they are nice. 90 CC $20's in the same shape should run $1000 to $1200. This is if they are truly in the AU 50 to 53 range. Lots of CC gold has been cleaned.

Yeah, and a lot of it also resides in NGC holders. This one is so obvious NGC ought to be ashamed of themselves.



I don't care how scarce of a coin it is, a heavily cleaned coin like this should not be in a top tier holder.

On this coin, go to the link for the coin at Heritage, and click on the obverse image for the large photo. Look at the area of the date, between the numerals the surfaces are nice and shiney. The rest of the surfaces (the left and right fields) were hazed to hide the cleaning, but they couldn't get at the small areas in the date. Stay away from any CC gold that looks like this.

Would the same be true if the coin was dark btween the numerals and shiny fields?

I'd need to see the coin in question rather than a hypothetical question. All I can do is show an example of a cleaned and messed with coin, as this is.

Thanks K6AZ, your picture explains it very well. I purchased an 89cc vf30 last year that has the same
markings of cleaned. It to was in an NGC holder. Whats up with that?

Just look at this PCGS slabbed eagle of the same date and grade also sold by Heritage. Can you see the difference now?

That's a GREAT natural not cleaned, non-dipped looking 92 CC $10 in the AU 55 PCGS slab !!
