Some of you might call it a waste of the best cards, but I think it's pretty damn cool. I think it's worth more than it's been bid right now. Wouldn't be surprised to see it go higher than $2000. auction
Not at all. I mean I of course thought, "Geez, that would be great just to have all those cards," but that rug is indeed really cool. Especially if it really was crafted in the 1910's.
Call me crazy, but I just put in a bid for this and I don't know much about hockey, especially pre-war. I just think it's too cool to pass up and the resale potential is decent. I don't think I'll win though. On the off chance I do win, it'll probably go to Sotheby's, or maybe even Mastronet. I think Sotheby's is a better bet because of the possiblity of having the rug collectors go against the hockey collectors. Gee, I wonder who'd win that fight.
Actually, considering it was the early 1900s I think it's pretty damn cool. The cards would've probably gotten thrown away anyway. Imagine if the same rug were made of cheap but cool looking 80s cards. I think it would look awesome. Luckily, I've had the opportunity to grow up in a family that deals antiques for a living, so I have a decent sense of what you can make money on. I think if this rug finds an auction with the right one or two people it could bring decent money. Hell, I think the cards raw with the holes in them could bring $500. Or I could be an idiot. Who knows.
I think I'll hit the bar anyway. Now that I think about it, I don't see any reason to go for the rack case as long as Steve still has the wax boxes with the sharp and glossy cards. Either way we're overpaying a little but we know what the cards look like out of the wax. BTW, he has 8 boxes left.
I think a better way to understand this wild looking thing is to ask what YOU would think if cards that you treasure and admire were made into a crazy quilt?
How about some '38 Goudeys?
How about Gem Mint '78 Topps baseball?
52 Topps full of Mantles, T-206, Turkey Reds.....
Beautiful, hachett job, resale value - depends on the perspective.

COLLECTING (other than belly button lint):
-Evgeni Malkin (when Pittsburgh pays the bribe money, er, ruble) -Heath Miller (the new TE bullseye for Big Ben) -Sport Kings in off-grade PSA (for you vintage freaks)
You can think about it that way, but you can also think about it from the perspective that the reason those cards are so valuable is that 95% of them were thrown away, and these probably would have been too. Instead, they were sewn into a cool looking rug. By the way, I was spot on with my original $2000 guess.
Since you said you were done bidding I put in a bid of $2,000 but didn't win.
After stareing at the montrosity for awhile I thought eh I really want the Vezina even with all the holes.. So I put in my bid of $2,000.. I was going to cut the strings on all the cards.. keep the Vezina and ebay the rest. The 51 other hockey cards alone would fetch a minimum of $1000. The baseball and other stuff I have no idea about but would have ebay'd it all as well including the stink'n rug.
I really thought with my bid of $2,000 was safe and I would win the lot for $1,800ish. Oh well my wife would have killed me in my sleep with the rug anyway.
Hey knuckles, the seller emailed me and offered the rug at my bid price of $1480. Did you get this offer as well? I'm thinking about it, but seems kind of shady considering there are three bidders higher than me.
