What's this in reference to? I can't follow the link at my job.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Troy R. Kinunen, Director of SCDA Authentication Services, purchased a Bart Star Game Issued jersey from ebay. He and Lou Lampson have issued LOA's and LOO's stating that it is a Game Used Jersey and it is now up for auction in the current
Vintage Authentics auction. I do not like the idea of buying an item with the sole purpose of flipping the item and adding your own LOA to boost the price (as it appears that this is the case with the item in question). You would think they would have learned something from the DiMaggio Bat debacle! image

That would be like me starting my own grading company and grading all my cards favorably in order to resell them. Very shady. One of the posters was spot on:

    "My opinion
It doesn't matter that Troy didn't have anything to do with the actual authentication. It's wrong that the head of SCDA gets an SCDA letter on a high ticket item that's being auctioned.
Doesn't matter how you spin it- it's a conflict of interest. You're either a dealer or an authenticator, but you can't be both on your item."

It simply doesn't matter whether the jersey is the real deal or not. On a side note, do you think Troy has ever had one of his own items not pass the authentication process?

  • is it any different than Mastro buying a collection then reselling it?

I thought mastro used third party graders, they don't authenticate the items themselves--so yes, it is different. If I am wrong about Mastro, then I apologize.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Mastro isn't doing anything to increase the value of the cards they buy, they are merely putting them up for resale through their own auctions. It would be like the owner of ebay buying something from a flea market and listing it in his own auction; it's not going to bring any more or less than it would have if somebody else was selling it. If they were to authenticate the game-worn stuff themselves, or put cards in a "Mastro GEM MINT 10" holder, then yes it would be a conflict of interest. However, if they show favoritism in how they market the stuff they own above every other consigner's, they are clearly not honoring the agreement between them and their consigners. I've never bought anything or even looked hard at any Mastro auction, so I don't know their business model. But if I were a consigner with them, I would prefer that my stuff be placed in a separate auction than the stuff they are selling themselves just to make sure my stuff gets a fair shake.

At this point it's not longer "third-party authentication." It's "first-party authentication" which should be assigned an appropriate weight. Of course, there's no reason to doubt authenticity, but they are certainly hoping whatever reputation SCD has earned to increase profit.

    sure
if a large oil company in texas ( or from anywhere else )
participate in a secondary offering the underwriters are permitted
to manipulate the price of the stock before and after the
    offering.this is known as "stabilization".
