Try "A History of US Coinage" by Bowers.

How about "The US Mint and Coinage" by Taxay?

I have found a lot of good info within the first few chapters of all the different price guide books at my library. Since I am still considered a newbie, I have been reading a lot.

Cherrypickers guide has a nice chapter about the minting process too.

For some history on the St. Gauden's double eagles, see if your library has "Illegal Tender" by David Tripp (my current read). It has a lot of history of the mint, politics at the time, the gold recall, and how some pattern pieces (and the 1933s) got out.

I'm sure some others will add additional specific titles but I hope that helps based on my experience so far.

Are you an ANA member? Call or email the Library there and you'll get plenty of help.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Fractional Money by Neil Carothers. It is a 1930ish look at minor coinage & fractional currency and loaded with information.

BTW, Asking for help like this doesn't seem OT to me. It's about researching U.S. Coins afterall.

You should change the thread title and more people will be happy to help.

edit/add: Plus, it will be easy to search for this thread when someone else wants to see a good book list (like me when I'm done with my current book). Good luck with the report!
