Is there a way to tell a '97 Silver Half Proof from a Clad Proof?

  • Or was that just the most idiotic question posted as of late?

Just look at the edge, your clad proof will have the sandwich clad reeding, with a copper layer exposed, while a silver proof's edge will be all white. After looking at a bunch of them, you'll be able to tell the difference from the color of the coin.

From the photo I would guess that one is silver.

I would have to double check, but I think the greenpack PROOFs from the 90s were clad. The Silver were in black boxes, but I don't recall the color of the inserts, and my wife is sawwing logs, I hate to wake her to check coins.

That's what the "S" on the front means...S for silver image
  • Yep silver in black boxes, clad in green.

Silver usually looks very different than clad. If you don't have enough experience to see it then
the edge is a sure giveaway. If you can't see the edge then you can weigh them. Packaging is
very uniform in weight so the only difference in mint packages will be the metallic content. While
I've yet to see switched coins there are some reports that this is happening.
