Maybe I don't know how to play the eBay game

Just got the feedback on one of my recent auctions = "Better condition than expected! Great service! Fast shipping- a credit to eBay".

I have bought too many cards in 2003 that were overgraded, until I wised up. Now I am beginning to sell, a little by little, my horde of raw vintage cards and sets and always felt that I needed to accurately describe them. I guess it's nice to know that I would exceed my customer's expectations but I am wondering if every potential buyer would automatically degrade raw cards just because you are supposed (which leads to the seller overcompensating)? That's perhaps a game I won't play.

FWIW.

With the scans you provided and the description it appears you under graded them a tad. 3.00 a card, the buyer did well. However Steve all that matters is if your happy with the sale.

Considering that I paid about $5 for them 20 years ago and they were just sitting in my drawer being completely useless (except that I like the feel of old cards), I would say that I'm happy with it. Better than nothing, right?

Yep. U did well too. The most important thing though is that you may have now gotten a customer that will seek you out. Add the good karma (what goes around comes around) and you should do ok.
    Good for you.
  • Buc,

If the Preacher Roe card doesn't have any back damage, you definitely undergraded that one.

No, I think every card including the Roe had at least one crease. It's hard to tell in the scan.

that buyer will probably come back.

i have seen examples of where a raw card sells for more than a graded one simply because the seller has such a great reputation and a nice following.

sadly you are an overwhelming minority, and it only takes buyers a couple of bad burns on buying raw cards on ebay, until they are simply fed up with raw cards and stick to graded examples only.

  • After looking at the scan, perhaps you could have more accurately called them "bicycle-spoke fresh." image

The cards had pretty good color, so that helps.

A lot of seller lists card with one crease as EX, if there is no other "major" flaw.

Buccaneer did the right thing but trying to describe the cards properly. Had he said they were VG-EX, then the buyer might have given him a hard time, but when you say G/F/P, people tend not to expect much.

$20 is $20 minus Ebay and Paypal fees of course.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

You listed them right, graded them right and had clear scans. You got the maximum pricing that you were going to get for those cards on ebay.

Don't give up your integrity, it's too valuable to trade for a couple bucks on eBay.
  • I have noticed that I consistently under estimate the grade of vintage (1950s) lower end cards. I might think that soft corners and a crease put it into the Pr/Fr range - and they come back in the VG range.

It's the high grade stuff that is tough to estimate (for me). I sent in a bunch of '57s thinking that they will come back as 7s only to get back a bunch of 6s, 7s and 8s ....and even a 9. The price difference between a PSA 6, 7 and 8 is very large - but the low grade price difference isn't as great.

I think there is a huge market out there for lower end vintage cards from the '50s.

WC, if that's the case, then discriminant buyers might like this. image

Truthfully, I have not seen a lot of graded 1950s cards so I don't know how the standards apply in comparison to 1960s graded.
