What success have you had in using the BST forum to sell your coins?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,108 ✭✭✭✭✭
To date I have not spent much time on nor have a igiven much thought to the BST forum. However, I am looking at my collection (some would say accumulation) and can not deny that I find myself with items I neither need or want. I would like to sell off parts of my collection and am curious about using the BST to sell same. Thus my post.ing of this thread.

What has been your experience with the BST in selling coins? If you have had success, please describe the best way you have found to list/describe items (i.e. single coin, multiple coins of a single series or bulk lot of multiple series). Thanks, SanctionII.

I've sold plenty of stuff there... no fees, and a lot of trustworthy people buying and selling.

Just say what you've got, and if there's a picture, show it!

I used to have a lot of success, but no one is buying from me the last month or two. What's up?
  • I have had excellent results over the years. If no one buys, then just move it to ebay and provide a link in the BST Forum to your auctions.

More luck buying than selling. Or at least it seems that way.

  • I had a little success selling some odds and ends. I'd try selling there first; lower your prices if things still don't sell and finally dump what you have left on EBay.

I've had much better luck buying on the BST board. I quit Ebaying so I like the board. I like that there are No fees. I've never had a problem or been stung by a bad seller.

First of all - I sold something to you!!

I have occasionally sold items to board members that were looking for a specific item - but not often. In addition, I have been notified of auctions that I might not have looked at otherwise.

For me, it has been a great way to sell items without the hassle of the auction houses - best of all no fees!!

  • I have had good success in both buying and selling. Many times an item is not of interest to anybody here. No problem. Many times an item is of interest but a price both parties can agree upon doesn't happen. No problem. Anyway it sounds perfect for you. Just list what you want to sell and how much you want for it.

Purchases and selling have been done many times on the BST forum. Only one small problem has ever came up and it was taken care of in the end. Pricing has to be right or a somewhat hard coin to find seems to do the trick on the selling end. Usually all I will offer is 'Forum Quality" coins, the others I deem not forum quality go elsewhere. For sure the BST forum is a Great Place for forum users.

With the exception of one item, I've sold everything I've offered for sale, and usually very quickly. The one item that didn't get grabbed up later sold on eBay for quite a bit more than I was asking in the forum. I should note, though, that when I do offer stuff directly in the BST, I discount it below what I could get if I auctioned it.

I've had pretty good luck buying and selling. Some things are harder to sell than others. I've never had any trouble with any of the deals, but when buying I usually only buy from people who also participate on this board on a regular basis.
  • I have only bought and sold a few pcs. here, but all have went very well. Good people here.image

I've not tried to sell much but have bought some very nice items from other members, and like Russ said the prices are usually a touch lower than somewhere else.

The BS&T board is usually the first place I turn to when I have something to sell.

  • I've never had any success. Within 15 minutes of posting, you're buried on the 2nd or 3rd page, and only allowed to ttt once per day, although some cheat frequently!

I have sold some of my excess stuff there, and picked up some things as well.

Always a good expereince, the people here are generally "stand-up" people that are great to work with. I'd highly recommend it if you are looking to sell some of your stash. I should probably thin my heard a bit, but I have such a difficult time parting with anything in my collection.

Thank you for all of your replies. I will have to spend some time going through my "stuff", organize it and take a spin on the BST.

I've never been been able to sell anything on the BST forum. I get nibbles, but not sales. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. Not necessarily true; would be more the exception than the rule.

I think it depends on what you're selling... Jeremy has great success because he's always selling nice coins that people are actively seeking... if you try and sell cheap junk, you generally won't find much of an audience...

The same applies to high end stuff. Seems the $50-200 items sell the best.

You get really good response if you have really good coins. You get OK response if you have OK coins. You get lousy response if you have low-grade, common stuff, unless you offer it very cheaply. I should know, as I've been purging a great deal of that sort of thing! Still, if you can put together junk into appropriately organized lots you can often do better than ebay, or at least as well, since there are no fees.

Basically, it seems like it is populated by
    a) people who like good coins -- i.e. attractive, high-grade, and/or uncommon, and
    b) people who have an outlet of some sort through which they can realize at better price for the common stuff I have to blow out below wholesale.

On the buying end, I've found the shopping there to be pretty good. Nice coins are offered, at competetive prices.

I've had extremely good luck selling and trading. I've used it only a few times though.
    Tempus fugit.
  • I have bought from very reputable people here with no problems. Selling has been OK but I have found that most buyers here want real DEAL prices(got some real rip offers). I ususally end up getting more from Ebay or show dealers in the end.

Best of all its free so I'd post what you have for sale and exchange references before you ship or get the $$ first. Then don't wait too long to try and sell elsewhere.
