Psst! Hey, Phil- did you know your "Germania" medal babe actually made it onto a coin?

I was surprised. Just happened to stumble across it accidentally, while leafing through Krause on the way to look up something else.

There she was. Same lady, same pose, but without the scenic background.

And in one of the last places I'd have expected.

Check out Palau, 1999 five dollars, KM#19, of all things. Strange.

I'll have to go a-Googling or eBay searching, since I don't have an example of the coin, and can't copy the pic in Krause.

Nope. Sorry. I struck out on Google Image Search and eBay. image

Maybe somebody has one or a picture of one.

It's the same Germania babe from Phil's droolworthy medal, but without the background. On a coin from Palau, of all places.

Wait a second... since that Palau series revisits some past international coin designs, wouldn't that mean that the Germania figure was already featured on a coin, some time in the 19th century? Hmm.

In 1999, Palau issued a set of eight proof $5 coins to commemorate the centennial of its becoming a German colony. The issue price for these was $40 each, but I got mine for rather less (and on the primary market to boot!image). These are actually difficult to come by and most were sold in Germany.

One of the coins had the bust of Wilhelm II on the obv. and a rev. of the German heraldic eagle, per the Prussian 5 Mark design of 1891-1908. The others had motifs with respect to each colony:

German East Africa -- An elephant, based on the GEA 15 Rupien gold coin of 1916 / Portrait of von Lettow-Vorbeck and the German East Africa colonial arms.

German Cameroon -- Portrait of Wilhelm I / Germania and the Kamerun colonial arms (per Tbirde's pic).

Kiau Chau -- Ships in the Kiau Chau harbor / a colonial emblem based on the 1909 coinage.

German New Guinea -- A large ship / German New Guinea colonial arms.

German Samoa -- Portrait of Wilhelm II from the GEA coinage (why, I don't know) / German Samoa colonial arms.

German Togo -- Seated Germania from the German 100 Mark notes of 1908-1910 / German Togo colonial arms.

    German South West Africa --

    Yep. It's snowing.
I'm polishing up my CV before I send it off to Spink, I think I'll email a bunch of other places today too. Need to make some calls too... so much to do.
