They look to be genuine. The seller explains the damage in his descriptions.
  • They appear to be real, but unfortunately, they all appear to be gouged by whatever tool they used to dig those up with. Our metal detector guys should give him some tips on avoiding such damage!! image

I do not see where such damage is described. I read 2 of the listings and got too much eye strain from reading the ALL CAPS DESCRIPTIONS!!

Sorry, the quote below was part of the description for the 1806/5, but was not included in the other few listings I checked:

"NOTE THE MARK AT THE 12 OCLOCK POSITION ON THE OBVERSE WAS PUT ON THE COIN SO THAT IF THE PERSON SAW THE COIN IN CIRCULATION THEY NEW THE CACHE WAS DISCOVERED. A LETTER OF PROVENANCE & A COPY OF A 1757 MAP SHOWING THE RECOVERY AREA WILL BE FURNISHED"

I would just ask him...he seems to get into detecting too...you might just hit it off....

A pure guess, but it could easily be correct.

  • remember its on EBAY
  • I ask because a year or so ago on a metal detecting forum elsewhere he posted blurry pictures of some 100+ bust halves spread out on a 4x8 sheet of plywood.

He stated he'd found them all in about 4 or 5 different hidden caches. Yet, he never provided any clear closeups of the coins that showed dates or anything definitive. Some of the pictures and details of his story seemed fishy. The forum consensus at the time was that his story was a hoax.

Just wondering if perhaps he's salting the mine to speed the sale of fakes to come, or if in fact the story/coins are the real deal.

The damage to the coins virtually proves that the deal is for real. Debate it all you like. I'm bidding.

The coins look real enough and some are very high grade. The marks at 12:00 look intentional and aren't made by digging them via a spade and metal detector. ALL bust coins have providence, having passed through early America, so I don't know what makes these marked up ones any more special. Now if they had been owned by a famous dignitary that might be something else, but being stored in an old fort is nothing extraordinary for me, but for someone in that area, the might have a special appeal.

For me, they have value, but no extra value for being buried in some old fort, and less for having big digs on the obverse.

The story behind this well-publicized cache is that the person who buried the coins marked 99% of them with a sharp tool. Nearly all of them have a heavy cut above Liberty's head. I believe there were tons of Bust quarters and spanish reales in the hoards too. One can only speculate as to why this was done.

Sounds like a fun group to follow but I would not want an intentionally damaged Bust Half Dollar.

All of the linked bust halves look way too cleaned and white for my taste- but otherwise they look completely legit....

These coins are most definitely authentic. I bought two of these coins from the seller (I'm assuming) at the Albany, NY Coin Show about two years ago.

The coins were absolutely gorgeous. At the time, he mentioned that he was working on having Bowers & Merena auction them. I held onto my coins hoping Bowers was going to put together a fancy auction for them. Guess the seller decided to go the eBay route. Maybe it is time to put mine on eBay?

Here are some pics (please excuse the dog hair on the reverse of the 1828). It appears the coins were carefully cleaned up when he took them out of the ground. I think they would still slab (if they didn't have the punch).

I am sure the dog hair die crack makes the coin much more valuable!

Here is a pic of the hairy culprit.
