Submission results... vintage crackouts/raw yay!!!!

Just got on-line submission results for my 6 freebies per my Gold membership renewal, and I am happy to report the following:

ORDER #4276832 ZIP: 20850

'67 Topps Al Kaline PSA 8 -------- bought raw at a local cardshop for $20, first the Yaz and now this... man those guys are lazy...
'68 Topps W.McCovey PSA 9 -------- bought on EBAY in an older SGC 92 holder, hunch was correct
'68 Topps M.Ditka PSA 9 -------- bought on EBAY in an SGC 92 holder, gorgeous centering, again, hunch was correct
'70 Topps A.Karras PSA 8 --------- bought at same local cardshop in an SCD 7.5 holder, nearly perfect centering... an 8 looks about right I suppose...
'82 Fleer C.Ripken PSA 9 --------- Bought in an older red CSA 9 holder for like $20, 'lil rough cut but perfectly centered, a 9 all the way...
'97 U.D. P.Marleau PSA 9 --------- Pulled from a pack 5 years ago, was hoping for a 10, but after the other triumphs, I can hardly complain

Just purchased an SCD 7.5 Jim Palmer RC, a '69 Topps Willis Reed BGS 8.5 (not BVG), an '83 Fleer W.Boggs RC BGS 8.5 (w/9 cent, 9.5 corners), and an SGC 98 '76 Topps R.Staubach BIN... hope I have as much luck with these, they will be sent along with some of my buddies cards as soon as I receive them and crack them... wish me luck.

Looks like you have a good eye for what PSA looks for. Are you doing this for your collection, or to resell? Do you spend a lot of time looking?

  • Not to be a party pooper, but it just shows me that PSA has relaxed standards. Just goes to show that most people are buying the number and not the card..........
  • I am always looking, since you asked... I do not collect sets, or either any one particular player, just high graded vintage stars/RC (for the dual purpose of a sound investment and to marvel at their beauty and rarity)... I just inherited what I consider to be a lot of $$$, but cards like my PSA 9 Alcindor RC, while the centerpiece of my growing collection, was purchased with profits from two years of finding ungraded or under-graded specimens on EBAY and abroad and encapsulating them in the holders that has become the industry and hobby standard, PSA's.

Everybody collects for different reasons, I personally view the high-grade vintage stuff the same way I view Berkshire Hathaway A/B shares... there are a limited supply and they never split, always rising with inflation... I also buy the card and not the holder, that is the only way one can actually find value in a card graded by one of the "other" companies imo... why anyone would have sent a vintage card to BGS before their BVG service was offered, is beyond me, yet I continue to find them scattered about on EBAY and Yahoo auctions, snapping them up every chance I get. Some of the nicer cards in KSA or even the old red CSA holders that I crack out even grade comparably even with PSA's perceived lofty standards.

BTW, do you live in MD or attend school there? I think we get to the sweet 16 this year even though many have written our Terps off after dropping 2 to NCST... of only Caner-medley would be a man for a change...

Just curious - have you had much luck resubmitting psa graded cards to psa?

Good strategy with the CSA holders. I think people shyed away from them because of the tackiness of the holder design, but their standards were about a half-notch below PSA when they first started.

Yeah, I'm in Baltimore. UMD class of 2000 (should've been '98). Imagine if we didn't sweep Duke. I'm sure Gary will have the guys geared up, but Strawberry would've made us a lot better.

I dont understand how a card can be a " 'lil rough cut but perfectly centered, a 9 all the way"......since when does a rough cut deserve a 9?

Since always.. one of my huge gripes with card grading is that factory rough cuts don't bring the grade down at all.. I've seen tons of PSA 9's with rough cuts. But yet they grade down on other factory flaws like print spots and centering.. Doesn't make any sence to me.

UGLY! I would take a clean edged PSA 7 over that any day. (from a collector perspective)

  • How in the heck are those bottom corners a "9"?!?! That is nasty!!!

"If PSA says its a 9, then its a 9. Who are you to argue with the big boys from the left coast? Go back to your little world you peon and remember that what we say, um I mean what they say is always right"....

    how's that?

If i was buying an Opeechee card, i would actually be reassured that it has a rough cut.

while a few authentic non doctored OPC cards have razor edges most do not.

A rough edge is fine as long as its not distracting or unusual for that particular set.

Some collectors actually like rough cuts since its pretty safe to assume that the card is pristine and unaltered.

  • My old scanner crapped out on me and I just purchased an HP psa 1315 all-in-one... others have been requesting scans of other vintage stuff I have and they are coming as soon as I get a new power supply.

As for the Ripken, perhaps I was bit too harsh with my rough cut comment... more like, some stray fibers exist on the edges, but as another said in another thread, just a sign of "minty-ness, as it does not detract from the asthetics of the card or distract the viewer... the surface of the card is spotless, and that is rare for the early 80's Fleer cards.

I will provide scans of all the vintage stuff I just received grades on as well as some other cards members showed interest in... sorry for all the delays but I had the flu and a broken scanner.

BTW, I'll take that Gretzky off your hands lol... I think she's a beaut... so did PSA...

    Jeezus, what a freak.......ahhhh heemmmmmm.....
    (you can all ignore that)

Actually, I dont mind pre-60s cards with a rough cut for raw cards in my collection. I know they arent trimmed and add a bit of originality to what really came out of packs from that era! In fact, I have a '56 Mantle that is rough cut on the bottom...gorgeous card and for what ever wacky reason, I wouldnt want it any other way, as far as a raw '56 Mantle goes!
