81 Donruss vs 81 Fleer

Last night when I was opening the Donruss box and Fleer box it was amazing the differences between the gum damage in the packs. The 81 Donruss packs had severe gum damage that seep through and destroyed almost half the cards in the pack! While in the 81 Fleer packs the gum looked almost as new as the day the packs came out, No cards were destroyed in the 81 Fleer packs, not even the top card the gum was setting on!! All I had to do was blow the gum dust off the top card, no damage, nothing! I wonder what Fleer used to preserve thier gum that year? I was perturbed that I got several high dollar Donruss cards that were totally desroyed. I did get one Nolan Ryan, perfectly centered in minty fresh condition though.

i just opened another 81d wax tonite. maybe 2 have a chance at a 9 or better out of the entire box...... however, the box i purchased this week was nothing like my last 2. this wax box had no gum damage, basically the same thing you experienced with the fleer. i could blow the gum dust off the card with no damage. the main problem with this box were the cuts. very, very poor...

    Thanks,

I just bought a box of the 81 fleer from bbcexchange...will be fun to open this box up, and hopefully pick up some error cards I need, as well as improve the overall quality of cards in my set.

Anyone have recommendations on the best way to pick up the error cards from this set? I won't consider mine complete until I have them all.

I used the master set of the set registry for my guide to all the errors.

I believe Beckett Annual lists all the errors also.

Are there actually High $$ cards in any of those boxes . . . am I missing something?image
  • Nothing real high dollar in the 81 Fleer Errors, just some number variations etc. i probably have the majority of the error cards in nice shape in quantity if anyone is interested. pm me or e mail pburnett04@comcast.net

For me the draw of the 81 fleer set is (1) I remember the drama involved in fleer and donruss fighting to be able to make baseball cards, and (2) all the error cards and the cards themselves were so different from the topps (the material of the cards themselves).

Should be a lot of fun opening the box.
