2005 Clad Sets

OK I'll throw out the first questions about these......

1. Do you think these are worth buying and stashing?
2. Given the manner in which the 2004 Clads sold out and shot up, do you expect something similar here?

Just wondering if I should buy a few extra, besides the one for my 1999-2008 Clad/Silver Set.

The past is a poor indicator of the future in this case. 2004 was an anomoly as the Mint went through a one time change in their production cycle. There may be fewer sets produced for some reason in 2005, but it won't be for the same reason as 2004.

  • Always worth buying extra, and they'll always be worth more in almost every case. Especially since interest is arguably at an all time high. I read they'll be changing the dollar coin in the future, and the Lincoln cent in 2009 - its centenial.

I usually 10 sets. I keep the one best set and sell the rest off as a part of the business. Sometimes I win; sometimes I lose; sometimes I'm stupid and sell too cheap - like last year. So it goes ...

  • I thought the reason the mint moved to change their production cycle in 2004 was specifically so that they could sell more products in 2005. I'd suspect that the reason for selling these sets earlier in the year is so that more sets could be sold -- which would tend to keep future appreciation down, especially compared to the 2004 sets.

Of course, that's just my 2 cents. And I just got an order in for 2 sets this morning (one for me, one just in case I need to give it out as a present).

I just buy one set per year, just to have it. I have no expectations of increases in value.

I bought 2 sets this morming with the anticipation they will be a very hot item and I can sell them for $500,000 each. Then I can retire! But, until that happens, I am not giving up my day job. (if you know what I mean)

You should only buy extra if you have the means to sell them efficiently and effectively.
