Legislation introduced to temporarily replace Sacagawea....

on the dollar coin with 4 presidents on each coin with Lady Liberty on the reverse. 1 coin per year starting in 2007, until all the presidents (except the sitting one) are included on the dollar.

also, a First Lady coin and medal.

They say the Sac hasnt circulated/been spent enough, and this would increase circulation/use of $1 coins.

I, personally, like the Sac dollars. I like a coin without a dead president on it myself. Nice change (no pun intended but it works well image).

thoughts?

ONLY way to get people to spend $1 coins is to get rid of the $1 bill. Any moron can tell that much...I guess the government is beneath moron level.

Why would they think that that putting out a different design each year, that would encourage the collecting/hoarding of the coins, would cause them to circulate?

Your right they are below the moron level.
  • My guess on their use would be for mechanical vending machines that presently take quarters.

Having all the presidents on them is an interesting idea. Putting a recent president would be too controversial because of bias against one political party or the other. Putting all of them on coins would be a "politically" correct thing to do.

It might even prompt some of us to learn who all the presidents were. If four are to be on one coin, it would be nice to have them in sequential order.

Yup. What a bunch of idiots. I'd expect nothing better from Carolyn Mahoney who is one of the sponsors. She doesn't know anything about
anything and has a single political goal of outlawing guns. She's the one who lost her husband in the Long Island RR massacre and ran solely
    on the anti-gun platform.

Leave the sac design alone and get rid of the one dollar bill. The sac is the best circulating (sort of) design since the WL half!

If the Delaware rep was Biden then I have to apologize. He is a huge moron and doesn't have a clue so what he thinks is moot.

I don't believe changing the obverse to a dead president will increase circulation at all. It may increase interest by young collectors in the coin, but not much else.

I sure hope they leave the Eagle alone. I love that series. Change the Sac to a better wearing alloy, dump the 1$ bill and run the Pres.'s on the dollar or the quarter after the states are done.

I just found this forum and love this hobby. I collect Silver Eagles, State quarters and I'm about to dive into Canadian Maple Leafs and Mexican Libertads. Yes, I like the large coins, but I cant afford the Morgans or the Walkers.

    Thanks all.

In all of the years that the Sac has been circulating, I have never ever received one in change. If I did get one, I would probably ask for a paper dollar, only because I just don't like to carry change. I doubt that changing the design will impact the circulation of the coins.

You can change the quarter because people KNOW what a quarter is. It's not merely
the design but the shape and texture and feel of the coin. Having a continuing program
of changing the workhorse of the economy on a regular basis is not going to impact peo-
ples willingness to accept them as legal tender.

People do not know the dollar coin. Many have never even seen one and the rest are not
accustomed to using them every day. Far from promoting the use of the dollar this would
remove any chance that the dollar will ever circulate.

If they want to do this then they should immediately get the coin in circulation by getting
the banks to distribute them by whatever means necessary. People quickly learn what
money is because they get something they really want when they exchange them. In only
a matter of months a design change would be of little consequence.

Four presidents on one coin diminishes their importance IMO. If the intent is to increase interest, any change accomplishes that. What was your suggestion in Coin World, Jeremy?

The state quarter program brought many people into coin collecting.

Might not the presidential series of dollars also bring new people into

the coin collecting fraternity. I do not know how well the coins would circulate, but they

certainly would be collected in large numbers.

Bubba, the now-deceased 22 lb lobster, should be on a new coin.

After a few months they could rotate designs to a B-52, nucular attack sub, or aircraft carrier.

    That would spark collector interest!

How each year we do coins with the species that have gone extinct the year before? Or, each coin gets stamped with the national debt at the moment it was minted? Or... I dunno, the 'weaponry' series suggested above got me thinking...

I completely agree that it would not get the coins to circulate.

What it would do is to give collectors a lot of coins to collect each year especially when the quarters and dollars would be out at the same time.

I would say drop all current coinage designs and start fresh with a new penny (could wait till 2009 for this) and go up to the dollar.

We don't need politically correct designs (SBA & SAC) we need good designs.

I would also like to see the silver, gold & platinum eagles changed as well.

They can change the design of the dollar coin all they want, but I don't want to use it. Carrying really coins from show to show is tough enough with having carry modern circulating stuff as well.

I think they are looking at this due to the great success, from the mints point of view $$$, of the SQ program. What are we up to 44 presidants now thats about 11 years worth of more new people collecting . Lets face it thats a big cash cow that will be drying up.They have to do something when the SQ finishes in 2008.

I think many people might be missing the point here in that Congress does not care if the new dollar coins may circulate. The fact of the matter is that they know that people will hoard the new coins, both established collectors and non-collectors, and that this hoarding puts millions of dollars into the Treasury as a voluntary tax.

Having the dollar bill and the coin circulating is a waste. I like bills becuase they are lighter but I like coins because, um..., they're coins! Now that almost all vending machines take the bills, the coins are kind of unecessary. Scrap one of the two. We don't need both.

I also agree that all that will happen with a new design is the same short term hoarding as happened with the Sac. So we still won't see anybody using them.

Yawn on the dead presidents too. How about some modern artistic style given to classic subjects (eagles, liberty, etc..). Like the obverse of the 1987 $5 gold commem - I love that design.

They need to take coinage designs a bit more seriously. The state quarter program was fine as it brought many new collectors into the
hobby. The Westward nickels are borderline stupid. The mint couldn't even get the first ones made in time for the 2003 anniversary of the Louisiana
Purchase, but whatever. Now they're talking years of all the dead & live presidents being minted concurrently with the Statehood Quarters. I think we
are loosing all dignity in our coin designs and they are becoming a marketing tool aimed at collectors and new collectors (kids). In my opinion
they are supposed to be representative of our country and our ideals, not politicians.

I'd be the only person hoarding Martin Van Buren dollars image.

Really though, it's kind of impractical to carry a pocket full of dollar coins :/.

Just curious, what's the cost on minting sacs in comparison to making dollar bills?(Good poll topic perhaps image) I'd be curious if there's a big cost difference in favor of one.

The paper dollar lasts only 18 months in circulation and then costs somewhat less than 2c to replace.
The Sac would cost about a nickel but will last for 30 years.

Since I don't have to dig in my wallet to spend coins they usually go first. There's no need to caryy a wal-
let full or a pocket full of dollars for most people.

The Bill includes a section that mandates that all government agencies and F.D.I.C. banks activly distribute the dollar coins, You would have to request one dollar bills. I don't know how they would enforce this issue but I don't have a problem with a few 1 dollar coins in my pocket I rarely carry more than a few singles anyway. The machines at work take dollar coins and I find it much easier to pop in a coin than feed a bill into the bill reader.
As for the presidents....I would be hoarding Millard Fillmore, Hes a bit of a hero in these parts.

But that is only true if they can get the coins out of the vaults and into peoples hoards. And if people don't ask for the dollar coin, the banks won't order the coins but will get dollar bills instead leaving the oins in the Treasury vaults. To get them out you have to ileminate the dollar bill so the banks and the customers have no choice but to take the coins.

But for those who complain that they don't want to have to carry a pocket full of coins, there is rarely ever a reason to have more than one. Why? Because there are two dollar bills. And if the dollar bill is dropped you will see a higher production of twos to take their place.

Holy cow!!! Great. This is what has been needed since 1979. The primary reason the coins
don't circulate is that the banks won't distribute then (often not even on request or there are
    limitations on numbers).

It shouldn't be overly difficult if they just send a few coins to the banks with each order of one
dollar bills. Keep increasing the percentage of coins until the banks almost have to force them
on customers. By this time the coin would be so popular they could just discontinue the paper.

    Thanks for the info.

Exactly. The loonie alongside the $2 bill worked very well in Canada.
