I don't usually buy raw, but this 59 Mays was calling my name.....

Hope it looks as good in person as it does in the pic. I had it watched because the seller listed it in the wrong category at first and thought I might get a good deal. Seller was inexperienced in selling cards by the way this and others were listed. Didn't think trimming was a possibility and the pic looks legit. Looks like a 5,6,or possibly 7, but I may just keep this one myself and not grade. Any opinions?

Nice card! Looks sweet to me. Judging from the scan, the edges look good so I don't think
it has been trimmed. If there are no surface wrinkles, I think you have
great shot at a straight 7 or the dreaded 8 OC.

We'll see if it looks this good in person. I guess I should also mention that I paid $60 for it.

Looks good....no link for us to peruse though. Good luck and good buying.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • the card is off centered, but looks otherwise fine. Hopefully you bought the card from a reputable dealer who offers a refund. Hidden creases are also a pain. There are too many things to worry about when buying raw off ebay, but more power to you if this guy turns out to be a 7. Doesnt happen often, but it does happen. I bought a 60 koufax and a 60 aaron raw awhile ago. Both looked very solid in the scans. It's in PSA for grading. If you grade this card, let us know what you get on it.

Being the owner of a complete 59 raw set and in need to upgrade my Mays card, I can say this card is a good find. Yes it is not centered well but the back is relatively blemish free. The 1st series cards from this set are known for print blemishes (speckling) on the back and the yellow tint of the back (of the 1st series) tends to age poorly.
This example has no blemishes and the darkening (aging) of the back is not bad.

I would have paid $60 for this card in a heartbeat........................up to $75.00.

    Someone else would pay more.

thanks for the info lostdart. Funny you say that because my high bid was $75. If you have any high grade (preferably raw) RCs from the 70s or early 80s, maybe we could work a trade out. Of course I'd give you a more detailed scan and description of the card once it gets here. PM me if interested.

  • Wasn't really in the wrong catagory. Just had one of those great titles that everyone usually passes over : Willie Mays San Francisco Giants Outfield Baseball Card Item number: 5169135733

Actually, I think they changed categories late in the auction. When I tagged it to my watch list it was in Baseball Cards- Other. The fact that they called it a baseball playing card and they didn't put the year in the title meant they had no clue what they were selling. Worst case- the card has a crease and I only get $30 for it. Best case- it doesn't and I keep it, or it grades a 7 and I get $150 for it. Judging from the corners on the scan, it doesn't look like it's been handled much, and therefore shouldn't have a crease unless it was there when it left the factory. I thought it was worth the gamble.

  • It looks like a very nice card. If the scan isn't hiding a wrinkle, it's a strong 7. Even if there is a small wrinkle, it's a 6 (SMR $95) or worst case scenario a 5 (SMR $60). Nice purchase.

  • OK, now I'm in your thread... great find, I guess one got away from me! Hell I'd have shelled out $60 in a heartbeat for her... should easily grade a 7 (or 8OC, ask for NQ) and is really a sharp card, centering aside.

    Way to go...
